Returning to Gentle Giant’s fourth album after any kind of lengthy absence, it’s astonishing just how little Octopus has dated. Often written off at the time as a pale reflection of the truly gargantuan steps being taken by the likes of Jethro Tull and Barclay James Harvest, the band’s closest relatives in the tangled skein of period prog, Gentle Giant often seemed more notable for its album art than its music. The trio hit their stride with second album Solid State Survivor, a brisk and confident set of synth-disco-pop that continues along the line drawn five years before by Kraftwerk. Fun-loving and breezy where Kraftwerk had been ponderous and statuesque, the album sets out YMO’s template for electronic pop with less minimalism and a more varying use of synthesizer lines. Yellow Magic Orchestra is the first official studio album by Japanese electronic music band Yellow Magic Orchestra, who were previously known as the Yellow Magic Band. Originally released by Alfa Records in Japan in 1978, the album was released by A&M Records in Europe and The United States and Canada in early 1979, with the US version featuring new cover art but without the closing track of “Acrobat”. Both versions would later be re-issued in 2003 as a double-disc format, with the American version as the first disc.
