B.B. King was 77 years old when Reflections was released, which perhaps entitled him to reflect back on the song standards the album contained. Despite advancing age, King had already been unusually busy on the recording front for a septuagenarian, turning out the gold-selling duets album Deuces Wild in 1997, Blues on the Bayou in 1998, Let the Good Times Roll: The Music of Louis Jordan in 1999, the double-platinum Riding With the King with Eric Clapton and Makin’ Love Is Good for You in 2000, and the seasonal recording A Christmas Celebration of Hope in 2002. On this accessible set of romance-themed songs, veteran Chicago blues vocalist Deitra Farr offers dynamic interpretations that frequently dabble in pop and soul. Standout tracks include the melancholy, gospel-tinged tune “Signs, Signals, and Warnings” and the emotive ballad “My Love for You,” both of which highlight Farr’s deep, expressive voice. In addition to being one of the world’s premier blues imprints, Chicago-based Chess Records presented some of rock & roll’s earliest participants. Chess Rhythm & Roll (1994) is a five-plus hour celebration of essential proto-rockers cut between 1947 and 1967. The four-CD assemblage is a companion to the Chess Blues (1992) box set and picks up during the label’s formative days when their repertoire was expanding to a greater audience beyond the realm of R&B. By the time Eric Clapton launched his solo career with the release of his self-titled debut album in mid-1970, he was long established as one of the world’s major rock stars due to his group affiliations — the Yardbirds, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Cream, and Blind Faith — which had demonstrated his claim to being the best rock guitarist of his generation. After two late-’60s albums on Columbia, Johnny Winter hit his stride in 1970 working with Rick Derringer and the McCoys, now recruited as his sidemen and collaborators (and proving with just about every note here how far they’d gotten past “Hang on Sloopy”). A Meeting by the River can best be described as a spontaneous outpouring of music, unhindered by convention or form, brought into being by musicians so supremely capable that the music is never labored, the technique of their craft always subservient to the final product. Cooder and Bhatt are genuine masters of the guitar and mohan vina, respectively. The latter, an instrument created by Bhatt himself, is a sort of hybrid between a guitar and a vichitra vina, and is played with a metal slide. Continue reading “Ry Cooder & V.M. In the 1970s, Tom Waits combined a lyrical focus on desperate, low-life characters with a persona that seemed to embody the same lifestyle, which he sang about in a raspy, gravelly voice. From the ’80s on, his work became increasingly theatrical as he moved into acting and composing. Growing up in Southern California, Waits attracted the attention of manager Herb Cohen, who also handled Frank Zappa, and was signed by him at the beginning of the 1970s, resulting in the material later released as The Early Years and The Early Years, Vol. 2. Buddy Guy’s music has changed a great deal since this album was recorded in Chicago in 1981. It is possible that Guy has never sounded better than this, tearing into some deep indigo blues, letting his guitar wail loud on every cut, and playing with inspiration, especially on the title cut and “Dedication to the Late T-Bone Walker,” a track that seems to spring from some place deep within himself. Nor was he the only one on fire at the sessions. Continue reading “Buddy Guy – DJ Play My Blues (1982) [2004, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Folk Singer is the fourth studio album by Muddy Waters, released in April 1964 by Chess Records. The album features Waters on acoustic guitar, backed by Willie Dixon on string bass, Clifton James on drums, and Buddy Guy on acoustic guitar. It is Waters’s only all-acoustic album. Numerous reissues of Folk Singer include bonus tracks from two subsequent sessions, in April 1964 and October 1964. Recorded in December 1983, In Session captures an in-concert jam between Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan, the latter of whom had become the hot blues guitarist of the year thanks to his debut Texas Flood, as well as his work on David Bowie’s hit Let’s Dance. Vaughan may have been the new news, but King was not suffering, either. He had a world-class supporting band and was playing as well as he ever had. Universal’s 2012 box set Ladies & Gentlemen…Mr. B.B. King is hardly the first B.B. King box set — MCA assembled a similar four-disc set called King of the Blues in 1992, Ace had a tremendous four-CD box called The Vintage Years in 2002 that covered his pre-ABC/Paramount recordings (apparently every ten years it’s time for a new B.B. box) — but it certainly is the most ambitious, arriving in two separate career-spanning incarnations. There has always been more to the Johnny Winter story than meets the eye, and if stepping into the role of a whirlwind albino electric blues guitar player from Texas with a brilliant slide style was the very role he was born to fill, he took a while to get there. For starters, he was born in Mississippi, which might explain something, and then grew up in Texas, where he played clarinet before switching over to guitar at the age of 11. If you’re going for the big gulp, you could do no better than this excellent four-disc box set, which covers all the highlights of Les Paul and Mary Ford’s tenure with the label. Sparkling sound abounds throughout (even on the old acetate masters like “Lover”), with the first three discs covering not only the best issued Capitol masters, but three of Paul and Ford’s radio shows for NBC and assorted catchy radio commercials for Robert Hall clothiers and Rheingold beer.
