Gram Parsons fondness for drugs and high living are said to have been catching up with him while he was recording Grievous Angel, and sadly he wouldn’t live long enough to see it reach record stores, dying from a drug overdose in the fall of 1973. This album is a less ambitious and unified set than his solo debut, but that’s to say that G.P. was a great album while Grievous Angel was instead a very, very good one. Given Gram Parsons’ habit of taking control of the bands he played with (and his disinclination towards staying with them for very long), it was inevitable that he would eventually strike out on his own, and his first solo album, 1973’s G.P., is probably the best realized expression of his musical personality. Another of Chet Atkins’ attempts to break into the jazz world during his Columbia period, this recording veers well across the line into new age wallowing of the most innocuous kind. At this point in time, when a record opened with soothing ocean waves, followed by a gentle wash of synths, you could pretty much expect the new age to be lapping at your feet throughout Continue reading “Chet Atkins – Sails (1987) [2015, Reissue, Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Cowboy Junkies have a sound, a vibe. There’s no denying it. You can tell it’s them within a few notes and each successive record seems to pick up right where the last one left off. Some, like The Trinity Sessions, are dark, moody, and mellow, like being coated in honey and draped in velvet. Continue reading “Cowboy Junkies – Open (2001) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Willie Nelson started calling his backing band the Family way back in 1973, right around the time he split from RCA, grew out his hair, and headed back to Texas. The Family also are featured on Willie Nelson Family, but this 2021 album is designed to feature his kin, including his sister Bobbie, his sons Lukas and Micah –the linchpins of Promise of the Real, sometimes backing band of Neil Young — and daughters Paula and Amy. Mortality hangs heavily on A Beautiful Time, as perhaps it should. Irish songwriter, composer, vocalist, musician and poet, Brian Flanagan has worked with artists from diverse musical backgrounds such as Michael Flatley, Nadine Coyle, Eric Bibb, Nathan Carter, Finbar Furey, Brian Kennedy and Sharon Shannon. Brian is renowned for his ability to write to order, emotionally charged pieces that are immediately engaging. Love, loss, self-pity, recognizing chances and taking them – or not, almost mystical nature experiences, life-changing encounters, art and artists, environmental protection, human rights: it is truly a broad, moving and very current spectrum of themes which Irish singer-songwriter Brian Flanagan has worked through in the eleven tracks on this Audiophile SACD. The hit single “Have You Never Been Mellow” carried Olivia Newton-John right back to number one, six months after “I Honestly Love You” brought the singer to that coveted position for the first time. The title track is a masterpiece of songwriting by her producer, John Farrar, an exquisitely pleasant melody with a sunny and peaceful theme. Having covered John Denver’s “Take Me Home Country Roads” on the Let Me Be There album in 1973, Newton-John goes back to the Denver catalog twice on this project, including her beautiful rendition of one of his lesser-known gems, “Follow Me,” with Farrar’s lush country-pop instrumental backing. Nine beautiful photos accompany the lyrics — Olivia with horses, Olivia in the hay, Olivia with a doggy; following up the phenomenal success of Have You Never Been Mellow was pretty elementary — Newton-John ruled the Top 40, adult contemporary, and country charts at this point in time. From the end of 1975 to early 1976, Clearly Love generated a Top 20 and two Top 30 hits: “Something Better to Do” and “Let It Shine” b/w “He Ain’t Heavy…He’s My Brother,” respectively. The title track was released in March 1974. Newton-John performed it at the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest when she represented the UK. Along with the title track, five other tracks from the LP had been the six shortlisted songs for the UK selection for Eurovision, broadcast as A Song for Europe, 1974. The song that placed second, “Angel Eyes”, was also released as the B-side of the “Long Live Love” single. (The other four songs were “Someday”, “Loving You Ain’t Easy”, “Have Love, Will Travel”, and “Hands Across the Sea”.) In May and August of 1974, Olivia Newton-John broke through in a big way with this album, the number five title track written by John Rostil, and the number one smash “I Love You, I Honestly Love You” by Jeff Barry and Peter Allen quickly established Olivia as a superstar to be reckoned with. The album is beautifully produced by John Farrar with his friend Bruce Welch of Marvin, Welch & Farrar fame helping out with the production on two of the tracks, Gerry Rafferty’s “Mary Skeffington” and Olivia Newton-John’s sole composition, the acoustic “Changes.” Continue reading “Olivia Newton-John – If You Love, Me Let Me Know (1974) [CD-Quality + Hi-Res Vinyl Rip]”
