It’s impossible to hear Jaco Pastorious’ debut album today as it sounded when it was first released in 1976. The opening track — his transcription for fretless electric bass of the bebop standard “Donna Lee” — was a manifesto of virtuosity; the next track, the funk-soul celebration “Come On, Come Over” was a poke in the eye to jazz snobs and a love letter to the R&B greats of the previous decade (two of whom, Sam & Dave, sing on that track); “Continuum” was a spacey, chorus-drenched look forward to the years he was about to spend playing with Weather Report. Ronstadt’s voice isn’t always showcased to a fine effect on these songs, but the record is an interesting change of pace. And it would have been more interesting if she hadn’t repeated its formula on her next two records. Style Council’s first proper album Cafe Bleu was one of their better efforts, but it indicated the group’s fatal flaw — a tendency to be too eclectic and overambitious. Amidst the lazy jazz instrumentals, many of them courtesy of Mick Talbot, Paul Weller inserted several solid soul-tinged pop songs, including “My Ever Changing Moods,” “Headstart for Happiness,” “You’re the Best Thing,” and “Here’s One That Got Away.” However, that doesn’t excuse the rap experiment, “A Gospel.” The album was later released with a slightly different running order as My Ever Changing Moods in the U.S.; the American edition included the U.K. hit “A Solid Bond in Your Heart.” Continue reading “The Style Council – Café Bleu (1984) [2010, Japan, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Polarity is an acoustic jazz project from Jan Gunnar Hoff and the Hoff Ensemble. Of the new release, Hoff writes: ”My main goal is to create a specific identity for each album I make. This time I chose to involve Anders Jormin and Audun Kleive, two of Scandinavia’s finest jazz artists. The result is Polarity, an album based on both new and older compositions of mine, recorded in a unique acoustic setting.” Polarity has been conceived as a cohesive experience where the compositions themselves, the moments of spontaneous inspiration during performance and the natural sound world of the church acoustics all affect the final result.
