Underdog is an album by the Atlanta Rhythm Section, released in 1979 by Polydor Records. It is their first album with the drummer Roy Yeager since the former drummer Robert Nix left the band near the end of 1978. These incredible recordings, which have never been released commercially, are from the original analog master studio recording sessions held in Los Angeles between 1964 and 1982. Gene Clark was one of the most influential musical pioneers of the rock era. A pivotal figure at the births of rock music’s golden trifecta of hyphenated subgenres (folk, psychedelic and country) in the1960s, he earned his rightful place in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame as a founding member and principal songwriter of The Byrds. A Rock and Roll Alternative was the Atlanta Rhythm Section’s breakthrough record. After five albums and four years of trying, they hadn’t gotten higher than number 74 in the LP lists, but this time their mixture of country and rock finally found its audience, largely due to the single “So Into You” (number seven pop, number 11 easy listening), so that the album soared to number 11 and went gold. It was only fair: the ARS had perfected a sound that was lighter and more accessible than the Allmans/Lynyrd Skynyrd school of Southern rock, but no less accomplished, and A Rock and Roll Alternative was the embodiment of it.
