Creedence Clearwater Revival - Willy And The Poor Boys (1969) [1994, DCC Remastered, 24-Karat Gold]

Make no mistake, Willy & the Poor Boys is a fun record, perhaps the breeziest album CCR ever made. Apart from the eerie minor-key closer “Effigy” (one of John Fogerty’s most haunting numbers), there is little of the doom that colored Green River. Fogerty’s rage remains, blazing to the forefront on “Fortunate Son,” a working-class protest song that cuts harder than any of the explicit Vietnam protest songs of the era, which is one of the reasons that it hasn’t aged where its peers have. Also, there’s that unbridled vocal from Fogerty and the ferocious playing on CCR, which both sound fresh as they did upon release. One of the first and longest-lasting country-rock groups, Poco had their roots in the dying embers of Buffalo Springfield. Just two months after the release of his seminal album After The Gold Rush, Neil Young played a solo show at The Shakespeare Theater, Stratford, CT on January 22 1971. The show was filmed and recorded, and the concert shown on German TV later in 1971. In 2020, while Neil and his team were reviewing his Archive for future projects, Neil re-visited the 16mm film and audio recording of this show that had been preserved in the Archive for almost 50 years. Piecing together the tapes and footage, Neil realized that he had the full concert – the film of which is the earliest live footage of Neil performing that is known to exist. Since the breakup of his group in 1971, McDonald continued to convey his political and ecological views through his music. This 1975 album, which includes the anthemic tune “Save the Whales!”, reflected an increase in McDonald’s ecological commitment, and features former Fish Bruce Barthol and ex-Instant Action Jug Band member Phil Marsh.
