Low Budget doesn’t have a narrative like Preservation or Soap Opera, but Ray Davies cleverly designed the album as a sly satire of the recession and oil crisis that gripped America in the late ’70s — thereby satisfying his need to be a wry social commentator while giving American audiences a hook to identify with. It was a clever move that worked; not only did Low Budget become their highest-charting American album (not counting the 1966 Greatest Hits compilation), but it was also a fine set of arena rock, one of the better mainstream hard rock albums of its time. The Shadows ‎– The Early Years (Expanded Edition): Their Complete Studio Recordings 1959-1966 (1991) [2013, Reissue, Box Set]

To be fair, this six-CD set is really for completists only, since the price tag is likely to put off anyone else. But if you’ve been hooked on the beautiful guitar work of Hank Marvin and the surprisingly muscularity of the band, delving deeper is a very good idea. Not only do you get all the big hits — like “Apache,” “F.B.I.,” and “The Rise and Fall of Flingel Bunt” (or even the wonderfully named “I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Arthur”) — you get literally everything. “My Only True Friend,” from Southern Blood, Gregg Allman’s final album, is a cipher, much like the man himself — private, reserved, and complex. Though twin, ringing, blues-drenched guitars introduce it, the song just as quickly morphs into a ballad: “You and I both know, this river will surely flow to an end/Keep me in your heart…I hope you’re haunted by the music of my soul…But you and I both know, the road is my only true friend….” The blues guitars cascade in again, adding resonance.
