Cyndi Lauper was one of the biggest stars of the early MTV era, selling five million copies of her debut album, She’s So Unusual, as well as scoring a string of four Top Ten hits from the record, including the major hits “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” and “Time After Time.” Lauper’s thin, girlish voice and gleefully ragtag appearance became one of the most distinctive images of the early ’80s Continue reading “Cyndi Lauper – Time After Time: The Cyndi Lauper Collection (2009)”

Pat Benatar’s polished mainstream pop/rock made her one of the more popular female vocalists of the early ’80s. Although she came on like an arena rocker with her power chords, tough sexuality, and powerful vocals, her music was straight pop/rock underneath all the bluster. Born Patricia Andrzejewski on January 10, 1953, in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, the singer was raised in the nearby town of Lindenhurst on Long Island, NY. Benatar began singing regularly in the New York City area by the ’70s, where she was discovered at the Catch a Rising Star club and signed by Chrysalis Records. Backed by a stellar band led by guitarist Neil Geraldo Continue reading “Pat Benatar – The Very Best Album Ever (2002)”

Sheryl Crow was one of the key artists of the ’90s, if the yardstick is capturing the sound and spirit of the time. A former backing vocalist for Michael Jackson — an association that led to dubious tabloid headlines romantically linking her with the singer long before she was a star in her own right — she rode the first great wave of Women in Rock hysteria of the alt-rock explosion to fame with her first album, Tuesday Night Music Club, in 1994, settling into the weary aftermath of the post-grunge years with her brilliant eponymous second album Continue reading “Sheryl Crow – The Very Best Of Sheryl Crow (2003)”

Somehow the same label issued two albums with the same name in the same year. This one, with 15 tracks, is vastly preferable to its 10-song counterpart. Both releases hit the high points with the irresistible “Gimme Some Lovin’,” “I’m a Man,” and others. With half as many tunes, though, this album includes the minor hit “Strong Love” and “Goodbye Stevie,” written by the group to commemorate the departure of sensational singer and multi-instrumentalist prodigy Steve Winwood. “Waltz for Lumumba” presages the jazzier turns he would take with Traffic. A great overview of the music from this group, one of the founders of the California sound in the late ’60s. This is a good collection of their unforgettable electric folk-pop songs, including “Monday, Monday” and “California Dreamin’.” (Originally released in August 1969 by Dunhill Records, 16 of Their Greatest Hits, it was reissued on CD by MCA Records in 1986.) When Smyth had her first hit with the band Scandal in 1982 with the peppy kiss-off “Goodbye to You,” MTV was still in its infancy and Alanis Morissette was not long out of diapers. Not exactly the stereotypical groundbreaker, the New York-born Smyth nonetheless helped make the pre-Madonna ’80s safe for women in rock, paving the way for such hit makers as Morissette, Sheryl Crow, and the whole Lilith Fair flock. While this career-spanning retrospective is a Continue reading “Patty Smyth – Greatest Hits – Featuring Scandal (1998)”

Recording The Nylon Curtain exhausted Billy Joel, and even though it had a pair of major hits, it didn’t rival its predecessors in terms of sales. Since he labored so hard at the record, he decided it was time for a break — it was time to record an album just for fun. And that’s how his homage to pre-Beatles pop, An Innocent Man, was conceived: it was Continue reading “Billy Joel – An Innocent Man (1983) [2013, Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]”
