Repressing. Digitally remastered collection from the undisputed kings of Bubblegum Psych. Love Beads And Meditation combines their two albums, Green Tambourine (1967) and Jungle Marmalade (1968), which mashed up Soft Pop Bubblegum gems with the band’s growling Rock tendencies and confused the hell out of everybody. The song ‘Green Tambourine’ was a massive hit everywhere and remains a dyed-in-the-wool classic. ‘Rice Is Nice’, ‘Jelly Jungle’, those sweet and soft hits just kept coming. Originally a hard-driving rocker in the vein of fellow Michigan garage rockers the Rationals and Mitch Ryder, Bob Seger developed into one of the most popular heartland rockers over the course of the ’70s. Combining the driving charge of Ryder’s Detroit Wheels with Stonesy garage rock and devotion to hard-edged soul and R&B, he crafted a distinctively American sound. While he never attained the critical respect of his contemporary Bruce Springsteen, Seger did develop a dedicated following through constant touring with his Silver Bullet Band. On The Pretender, Jackson Browne took a step back from the precipice so well defined on his first three albums, but doing so didn’t seem to make him feel any better. Employing a real producer, Jon Landau, for the first time, Browne made what sounded like a real contemporary rock record, but this made his songs less effective; the ersatz Mexican arrangement of “Linda Paloma” and the bouncy second half of “Daddy’s Tune,” with its horn charts and guitar solo, undercut the lyrics. Marc Cohn is one of the finest debut albums of the 1990s, and it brought adult piano pop back to the radio. Every song is well-crafted, and Cohn’s singalong choruses, introspective lyrics, and vocal stylings reveal his ’60s soul and ’70s singer/songwriter influences. His voice is rich, but has a roughness that adds emotion when stretching to the upper end of his range while remaining subtle at the lower end. Sting seemed to tire of pop songs sometime early in the 21st century, wandering away from the format after 2003’s well-mannered Sacred Love. Over the next 13 years, he entertained his esoteric interests — he collaborated on a classical album, he rearranged his old tunes for an orchestra, he reunited the Police, he wrote a musical — before he returned to pop/rock with 2016’s 57th & 9th. There are usually thought to be two phases to Robert Palmer’s career: an earlier one running from 1974 to 1983, when he explored New Orleans second-line funk and reggae, backed by members of Little Feat and the Meters and turned out a series of critically acclaimed, modestly successful recordings, and a later one, from 1985 on, when he rode his good looks, some high-fashion videos, Continue reading “Robert Palmer – Best Of Both Worlds: The Robert Palmer Anthology (1974-2001) (2002)”
