The Hungarian bassist Arnie Somogyi, a long-time luminary of the British contemporary scene, recently formed an alliance with the US doctor-turned-jazzman Eddie Henderson, this cemented with an appearance ar Ronnie Scott’s and this recording. Much of the music performed here by Somogyi’s Ambulance band emerged during a musical development residency at the Snape Maltings, with Henderson added for a May 2006 tour and for this 2007 recording. Elephant Mountain (1969) is the Youngbloods’ third long-player and marks their debut as a trio — featuring Jesse Colin Young (bass/guitar/vocals), Joe Bauer (drums), and Lowell “Banana” Levinger (keyboards) — after the departure of co-founder Jerry Corbitt (guitar/vocals). Although the band initially formed out of the early ’60s Northeast folk scene, by the time this set was issued they had relocated to the pastoral Northern California county of Marin. Rosemary Clooney may have seemed to be a surprising choice to be featured with Duke Ellington & His Orchestra, but this collaboration is extremely successful in spite of the fact that Clooney was unable to join the band in the studio due to complications of a very difficult pregnancy. The solution was for the band to record the music (after Billy Strayhorn made the first of several trips to Los Angeles to consult with her). The results are stunning and not in the least bit canned, due to the professionalism of all parties involved and a stellar engineering of the separately recorded tracks. Sarah Vaughan brings an almost chameleon-like presence to this album, which encompasses a decidedly — almost defiantly — contemporary repertory. Her gospel approach to “Imagine” could only have delighted John Lennon at the time, while for “Inner City Blues” she embraces a fiercely soulful jazz approach, the horn accompaniment in particular romping over the tune as much as she does. For the most part, 1979’s Eve is somewhat overlooked as being one of the Alan Parsons Project’s finest work, when in fact it involves some of this group’s most intricate songs. The album’s concept deals with the female’s overpowering effect on man. Each song touches on her ability to dissect the male ego, especially through sexual means, originating with Eve’s tempting Adam in the beginning of time. Not only does this idea gain strength as the album progresses, but a musical battle of the sexes begins to arise through each song. The gorgeous “You Won’t Be There” spotlights man’s insecurity. No sophomore jinx here. Of course, there are only two Wallflowers left from their first release, so this could be called a whole new band. No matter, because the music here is assured and contemporary with just enough of the past showing through to catch one’s eye. Jakob Dylan has been polishing his compositional chops and it really shows on such cuts as “Invisible City,” the hit “6th Avenue Heartache” and especially “One Headlight.” A fine effort indeed. Yet this is all for the good for this Antonio Carlos Jobim protegé, who can comfortably give material by the more contemporary writer Djavan, and even Carole King’s “You’ve Got a Friend,” the bossa nova treatment.
