One of the more notorious albums in the history of vocal music, What a Diff’rence a Day Makes! is the lush session that bumped up Dinah Washington from the “Queen of the Blues” to a middle-of-the-road vocal wondress — and subsequently disenfranchised quite a few jazz purists. During 1944-1958, Dinah Washington recorded jazz, blues, R&B, pop, and even gospel, excelling in each area. In 1959 after she had a major pop hit in “What a Difference a Day Makes,” the quality of her recordings declined as she was mostly backed by large anonymous studio orchestras in an attempt to duplicate that song’s commercial success. The arrangements were often more suitable for a country singer than for Washington, and her own singing seemed exaggerated and overly mannered. Julian Lennon released his debut, Valotte, in 1984, not even a full four years after his father John’s assassination. The wounds were still fresh and there were millions of listeners ready to embrace the son of a Beatle, particularly when he sounded remarkably like his father on the stately piano-led ballad “Valotte,” the first single from the album. Because more than half of the 35 songs on this two-disc retrospective of Marianne Faithfull’s 1979-95 output come from her three great albums — Broken English, Dangerous Acquaintances, and Strange Weather — or are previously unreleased outtakes or B-sides from them, A Perfect Stranger: The Island Anthology makes a fine primer to Faithfull’s often challenging, always mesmerizing (or would that be always challenging, often mesmerizing?) music. “Ballad of the Soldier’s Wife,” her solid contribution to 1985’s Lost in the Stars: The Music of Kurt Weill, is also included, giving Faithfull’s hauntingly tragic voice the resonance and attention it demands. Killing Machine (known as Hell Bent for Leather in the U.S. due to controversy at the time of its release) is the fifth studio album by British heavy metal band Judas Priest. With its release in October 1978, the album pushed the band towards a more commercial style; however, it still contained the dark lyrical themes of their previous albums. While most bands undergo a number of changes over the course of their careers, few groups experienced such radical stylistic changes as Fleetwood Mac. Initially conceived as a hard-edged British blues combo in the late ’60s, the band gradually evolved into a polished pop/rock act over the course of a decade. Originally a product of Britain’s new romantic movement, Depeche Mode went on to become the quintessential electropop band of the 1980s. One of the first acts to establish a musical identity based completely around the use of synthesizers, they began their existence as a bouncy dance-pop outfit but gradually developed a darker, more dramatic sound that ultimately positioned them as one of the most successful alternative bands of their era.
