By all accounts, the somewhat unexpected 2014 King Crimson tour was a resounding success and Live at the Orpheum is the first offering for those who were unable to attend. The band had been reinvented with a combination of new and returning players and the set list consisted largely of tunes that hadn’t been performed live since the ’70s, if at all. The main wild card was the three-drummer front line, which easily could have turned into a mess, even without music as challenging as Crimson’s. Six CD book set celebrating the late, great Ken Hensley. Solo (CD1) focuses on gems from his first three solo albums, released by Bronze records between 1973 and 1981. A Glimpse of Glory (CD2) from 1990 explores Ken’s songwriting depth and his examination of faith. Running Blind (CD3) features mixture of songs of different styles. The Last Dance (CD4) features Tommy Lopez (drums), John Smithson (bass) and Ovidio Lopez (guitar) with some classic slide guitar from Ken on ‘Crying’. Always a prolific songwriter, on 2005’s Cold Autumn Sunday (CD5) Ken took time to record a number of songs from his back catalog. This collection, remastered for SACD, covers the Zombies’ short and tasteful career, spanning their 1964-1967 years for Decca Records, and their single album, the classic Odessey & Oracle, for Epic Records in 1968. Two versions of “She’s Not There” are included here, one the so-called “stereo underdub” version that lacks the snappy drum overdub that gives the superior single version its crisp, edgy feel. There are also two mixes of “Time of the Season,” the familiar version and an alternate mix that features a little more organ in the verse sections.
