Jazz artist José James (Rainbow Blonde Records) released his first ever Christmas album Merry Christmas from José James on November 19th. The contemporary album celebrates the holiday season while honoring classic jazz and pop records of the 1950s. Today James releases the first single, “My Favorite Things,” a joyful rendition of the John Coltrane staple. A 13 date tour to support the album will launch at SF Jazz in San Francisco on November 27th and conclude at New York’s City Winery on December 14th. Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga recorded Love for Sale, their second duet album, with the knowledge that it was likely the last from Bennett. Back in 2016, two years before the sessions for Love for Sale started, Bennett was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. By the time Love for Sale was released in 2021, he’d officially retired from live performances. The Gaga collaboration wasn’t billed as Bennett’s final album, but given his health and advanced age (he turned 95 in 2021), Love for Sale is more likely than not a farewell. Often dismissed during their existence as a crass marketing gimmick, the Runaways have grown in stature over the years as the first all-female band to make a substantial impression on the public by playing loud, straight-up, guitar-driven rock & roll. Since all of the members were teenagers (some of whom were still learning to play their instruments when they passed their auditions), the band’s music was frequently raw and amateurish, but it neatly combined American heavy metal with the newly emerging sound of punk rock.
