Blood, Sweat & Tears - Nuclear Blues (1980)

This 1980 edition of rock’s longest-running horn band is definitely not your father’s Blood, Sweat & Tears. Frontman David Clayton-Thomas is still on board, but everybody else is new. Continue reading “Blood, Sweat & Tears – Nuclear Blues (1980)”

Simply Red are a pop institution, at least in areas of the world that are not the United States, and like all institutions, they’re in need of a monument to their longevity. Song Book 1985-2010 is that monument, a four-disc box set that tells their story, concentrating on their hits but also adding a disc of new recordings where they revisit deep cuts from their catalog, refashioning them so they sound similar to latter-day Simply Red. Various Artists – Waiting To Exhale (Original Soundtrack Album) [1995]

Various Artists - Waiting To Exhale (Original Soundtrack Album) [1995]

Mega-producer Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds assembled quite a cast for this critically acclaimed soundtrack (and movie). The phenomenal Whitney Houston leads a mostly all-star cast of artists. Houston is featured on three of the 16 selections including the “Exhale (Shoop Shoop),” which crested at the number spot on the Billboard R&B charts for eight consecutive weeks and one week at number one on the pop charts. Various Artists – The Woman In Red (Selections From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (1984)

Various Artists - The Woman In Red (Selections From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (1984)

Stevie Wonder’s career in the 1980s was a source of frustration to the fans he had earned in the ’60s and ’70s. In 1982, there were a few new songs on a greatest-hits album and a duet with Paul McCartney. Then came this soundtrack to a Gene Wilder comedy that was simultaneously more of a pop vocal album than most soundtracks and yet less than a full-fledged Wonder record. Robert Plant & Alison Krauss – Raise The Roof (2021) [Deluxe Edition]

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Raise The Roof (2021) [Deluxe Edition]

Raising Sand, the first collaborative effort between Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, seemed to come from out of the blue in 2007. The pairing of golden rock god and bluegrass troubadour was as unexpected as the album’s subdued, nuanced Americana, a sound that existed at the crossroads of the past and the present. It seemed like lightning in a bottle, the kind of magic that couldn’t be reproduced, and the subsequent decade or so suggested that suspicion might be true. Various Artists – Greatest Ever Jukebox Legends (2021) [4CD Set]

Various Artists - Greatest Ever Jukebox Legends (2021) [4CD Set]

Greatest Ever Jukebox Legends takes you back in time to the Fifties and Sixties! Stack up these four discs and let the 80 tracks transport you to a different time, via the sixties beat boom (represented here by Herman’s Hermits, The Searchers and The Hollies), Atlantic soul (Aretha Franklin, Sam & Dave and The Drifters) and the roots of rock’n’roll in the fifties (Joe Brown, Lonnie Donegan and Rickie Valance). Greatest Ever Jukebox Legends is a snapshot of a moment in musical history. Continue reading “Various Artists – Greatest Ever Jukebox Legends (2021) [4CD Set]”

Circus – Circus (1976) [2022, Japanese Remastered, SHM-CD]

Circus - Circus (1976) [2022, Japanese Remastered, SHM-CD]

Coming from the NW Switzerland on the language border between the Alemanics and the Romands, this unusual quartet of musicians has a strange line-up. Hauser is one of the better percussionists (still playing but in jazz bands nowadays), and bassist Cerletti (the only non-Alemanic in the band) is certainly excellent plays also acoustic guitar. The other two, Fri and Grieder, share the wind instruments with the vocals. That’s it! No KB and almost no el. guitars, at least on the first two albums. Big Big Train – Welcome To The Planet (2022)

Big Big Train - Welcome To The Planet (2022)

Welcome To The Planet is the next studio album by Big Big Train and comes six months after the release of the band’s critically acclaimed top 40 album Common Ground. As With Common Ground, Welcome To The Planet sees Big Big Train retain their progressive roots but also take influence from all spheres of music. The album’s opener ‘Made From Sunshine’, co-written by guitarist Dave Foster and singer David Longdon, has guitar lines redolent of Johnny Marr and vocal harmonies reminiscent of the Finn Brothers/Crowded House, with violinist Clare Lindley sharing lead vocals with Longdon. Various Artists - Good As Gold (Artefacts Of The Apple Era 1967-1975) (2021) [5CD Set]

Five CD set. Established in 1967 at the height of their powers, The Beatles’ Apple operation saw the group embrace and encourage a wealth of contemporary musical talent, offering studio time and demo facilities alongside recording and publishing contracts. This unique opportunity attracted artists and songwriters from across the musical spectrum, and Good As Gold presents a snapshot of that talent, spanning the years 1967 to 1975. From the psychedelic tinged sounds of the mid-late 1960s onwards, the label matured and evolved alongside it’s audience and remains as compelling today as it did during those halcyon days.
