This orchestral synthesis of motifs and segments from Wagner’s famous operatic cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen was arranged by Henk Vlieger to highlight Wagner’s underlying symphonic way of thinking. Vlieger is a composer in his own right and also a percussionist with The Netherlands Radio Orchestra. Amazingly, all the major themes and leitmotifs remain, despite the fact that four mighty operas have been compressed into a 60-minute symphonic treatment. Coleman Hawkins recorded three sessions for Impulse Records in the early to mid ’60’s. Of the three, Today And Now is the most compelling and the unusual choice of repertoire is what sets the album apart. The Hawk plays with an abandon that is altogether effortless throughout and his versions of the traditional song ‘Go Li’l Liza’ and the fairly obscure Quincy Jones ballad ‘Quintessence’ are creatively rendered. The Genius After Hours is a 1961 album by Ray Charles. All of the songs were taken from the same three studio sessions that created the album The Great Ray Charles which featured the use of both a trio and a septet; the latter arranged by Quincy Jones. Also appearing on the album is David “Fathead” Newman on tenor and alto, as well as the trumpeter Joseph Bridgewater. It was reissued in 1985 by Atlantic Jazzlore. James Taylor bounced back from the spotty Flag with this all-original album led by his collaboration with J.D. Souther on “Her Town Too,” his biggest pop hit since “Handy Man,” and his biggest non-cover hit since his first, “Fire and Rain,” in 1970. Also included were “Hard Times” and “Summer’s Here,” not to mention the unusually impassioned “Stand and Fight.” After simmering this long, there wasn’t much hope Taylor would ever come to a boil, but that track indicated he could at least heat up now and then. At the time these tracks were cut, 1967 and 1968, R.L. Burnside was working on a plantation in Coldwater, MS, cutting silage. Folklorist George Mitchell was on a mission to record unknown blues singers down South. Mitchell heard about Burnside and paid him a visit, asking if he could record him. Just One of Those Things is a theme album comparable to one of Frank Sinatra’s uptempo swing albums of the same period (Come Fly with Me, etc.), and employs the same arranger/conductor, Billy May. Nat King Cole is a bit less effective than Sinatra at uptempo material; he tends to undersing these sprightly standards, and May saves his dramatic horn charts and percussion shots for moments when Cole is away from the microphone.
