The hit single “Have You Never Been Mellow” carried Olivia Newton-John right back to number one, six months after “I Honestly Love You” brought the singer to that coveted position for the first time. The title track is a masterpiece of songwriting by her producer, John Farrar, an exquisitely pleasant melody with a sunny and peaceful theme. Having covered John Denver’s “Take Me Home Country Roads” on the Let Me Be There album in 1973, Newton-John goes back to the Denver catalog twice on this project, including her beautiful rendition of one of his lesser-known gems, “Follow Me,” with Farrar’s lush country-pop instrumental backing. The title track was released in March 1974. Newton-John performed it at the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest when she represented the UK. Along with the title track, five other tracks from the LP had been the six shortlisted songs for the UK selection for Eurovision, broadcast as A Song for Europe, 1974. The song that placed second, “Angel Eyes”, was also released as the B-side of the “Long Live Love” single. In May and August of 1974, Olivia Newton-John broke through in a big way with this album, the number five title track written by John Rostil, and the number one smash “I Love You, I Honestly Love You” by Jeff Barry and Peter Allen quickly established Olivia as a superstar to be reckoned with.
