When it comes to new wave compilations that attempt to strike a balance between well-known hits and lesser-known singles that deserved more play, the New Wave installment in Hip-O’s Gold series has to be considered exceptional. If you already own a good number of new wave comps, you will likely have a good portion of what is here, including Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love,” the Waitresses’ “I Know What Boys Like,” Bow Wow Wow’s “I Want Candy,” and Nena’s “99 Luftballoons.” This being a generous 30-track, two-disc set, there’s a lot of room left for the deeper inclusions. A cursory glance at A Moon Shaped Pool may suggest a certain measure of indifference on the part of Radiohead. Its 11 songs are sequenced in alphabetical order—a stunt befitting a Pixies concert or perhaps a Frank Black box set, not a proper album—and many of these tunes are of an older vintage: the group began work on the opener “Burn The Witch” at the turn of the century, while the closing “True Love Waits” first appeared in concerts way back in 1995. The two-disc set contains a disc of some previously released hits (some in single edit form; only “My Name Is Prince” has not been on a previous hits collection), and another of extended remixes of hits and a B-side, most of which have only been previously released as vinyl 12-inch singles. A tie-in to the exhaustive 2013 box set Sound System, the 2013 compilation The Clash Hits Back is a novel approach to a career retrospective: it mirrors the 24-song set list for the band’s July 19, 1982 concert at Brixton Fairdeal, then adds eight bonus hits at the end. The Clash Hits Back slightly tweaks the running order of the original set — “Bankrobber” arrived five songs into the concert but appears eighth here — but that doesn’t matter much, as this swap doesn’t alter the impact of the original set. The Beginning of Survival is a whopping 16-track collection from Joni Mitchell’s Geffen period, recorded between 1985-1998, and carefully chosen by the artist as “commentaries on the world in which we live.” One has to wonder about the title: if by saying this is “the beginning of survival,” Mitchell is referring to her own retirement strategy — she is no longer making new records. It took quite a while for a definitive Barry White compilation to hit the market, but All-Time Greatest Hits — part of Mercury’s Funk Essentials series — finally filled the bill in 1995. Boasting a full 20 tracks from White’s heyday of 1973-1978, more than half of which made the R&B Top Ten, All-Time Greatest Hits is easily the most generous single-disc White collection on the market.
