Chim Chim Cheree has been dubbed “a tribute to John Coltrane.” Returning with usual sidemen Harold Mabern at the piano, Joe Farnsworth on drums, and bassist John Webber, this album represents a thorough examination of Coltrane’s music made up of Coltrane originals and tunes Coltrane ostensibly owned throughout his career. The Band weren’t planning on making an album when they started work on their fourth LP, 1971’s Cahoots. Their manager, Albert Grossman, was building a recording studio in Woodstock, New York, where the members of the Band lived, and he invited them over to try the place out as finishing touches were being put on the studio. The first studio album of Band originals since 1971’s Cahoot — in many respects, Northern Lights-Southern Cross was viewed as a comeback. It also can be seen as a swan song, in that its recording marked the last time the five members would work together in the studio as a permanent group, with a commitment to making a record they would tour behind and build on as a working band. 52nd Street is mastered from the original master tapes and made available on transparent hybrid SACD. The wider and deeper grooves – as well as the meticulous mastering process – yield resplendent dynamics, broad soundstages, three-dimensional perspectives, and tonal balances absent from prior editions. Indeed, Joel wouldn’t sound more realistic if were playing ten rows away from you onstage. Continue reading “Billy Joel – 52nd Street (1978) [2012, MFSL Remastered, CD-Layer + Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

An essential title in our Billy Joel catalog restoration series, An Innocent Man is mastered from the original master tapes and pressed on 180g LP at RTI. The resulting presentation effortlessly outshines that heard on all previous editions of this 1983 set. Particularly, the effervescent harmonies now possess an airiness and extension that lends to realistic tonal decay. Instruments are balanced and placed on a wider Continue reading “Billy Joel – An Innocent Man (1983) [2013, MFSL Remastered, CD-Layer + Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

This sonata combines pleasurability, interestingness and substance; novel and charming melodies with elegant modulation and exquisite harmony. The sonata’s magnificent style compares favourably to Mozart’s best works of this kind.” (Review of the Sonata op. 11 in: Zeitung für die elegante Welt, 1807) “Whether or not Wilms had Mozart in mind – he certainly held him in his heart! Without doubt, he has matched the master with this work.” Continue reading “Werner von Schnitzler / Jakub Tylman / Cosmin Boeru – Johann Wilhelm Wilms: Violin Sonatas & Piano Trio (2010) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Johann Wilhelm Wilms was once called the Dutch Beethoven. His works were extremely popular and were met with tremendous praise. However like contemporaries such as Eberl and Fesca, it became increasing difficult to compete with Beethoven and his works eventually fell into oblivion. Ry Cooder has always believed in the “mutuality in music,” and this may be no more evident in his career than with his fifth album, Chicken Skin Music (a Hawaiian colloquialism, synonymous with goosebumps). Even more than usual, Cooder refuses to recognize borders — geographical or musical — presenting “Stand By Me” as a gospel song with a norteño arrangement, or giving the Jim Reeves country-pop classic, “He’ll Have to Go,” a bolero rhythm, featuring the interplay of Flaco Jimenez’s accordion and Pat Rizzo’s alto sax. The intention of I Musici’s latest production is to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi. The musical journey starts with a tribute to Francesco Geminiani, outstanding exponent together with Locatelli and Somis from Corelli’s school. The Concerto Grosso No. 12 “La Follia” from the sonata op. 5 no. 12 by Arcangelo Corelli for strings and harpsichord (a theme and variations) Continue reading “I Musici – Concerts and Follies In Pergolesi’s time (2009) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]”
