Joe Cocker’s first three A&M albums form the bedrock of a career that spans over three decades. Limited Japanese-only triple SACD Hybrid disc in paper sleeve including seven bonus tracks. The unreleased tracks, which had been sealed for 44 years, included in this set, and are finally listed in the original order. These seven are: “Japan,” “Bamble,” “Ummu Uum,” “Sacred Light,” “The Creator Has A Master,” “Saver,” and “Conga Solo” (about 35 minutes total). One of the rock masterpieces from Santana, Lotus, becomes a Japan exclusive SACD hybrid multi-channel edition (4ch mix). It uses two-layered SACD with DSD 11.2MHz mastering. Coming off such conceptual, theatrical, sleazy hard rock records as the massively successful School’s Out (1972) and Billion Dollar Babies (1973), the Alice Cooper group decided that their next release would be more along the lines of their earlier, more straightforward work (à la Love It to Death). While Muscle of Love was a gold-certified Top Ten success, it performed below expectations (their previous two albums peaked at number two and number one, respectively) and would unfortunately prove to be the original Alice Cooper band’s last studio album together. There was a year’s delay before this film, which concerns the mysterious death of a fictional ’60s rock star, took off via video and cable TV, but when it did, the soundtrack album, featuring such songs as “On the Dark Side” and “Tender Years” by John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band, took off with it. Vibraphonist Cal Tjader is in typically fine form on this live set from 1968. His quintet at the time featured Armand Perazza on congas and pianist Joe Kloess and his repertoire ranged from Afro-Cuban jazz to occasional straightahead tunes. Six of the eight selections on this date are originals by band members or Gary McFarland. Although Tjader had been playing this style of music for 15 years by this time, he still was quite creative and enthusiastic, and is heard throughout in excellent form. Great rock & roll bands aren’t supposed to be as modest as Los Lobos, an unlikely band comprised of five world-class musicians who write, sing, and play brilliantly, have been doing it for close to 30 years — and don’t appear to feel compelled to make a big show of it.
