Style Council’s first proper album Cafe Bleu was one of their better efforts, but it indicated the group’s fatal flaw — a tendency to be too eclectic and overambitious. Amidst the lazy jazz instrumentals, many of them courtesy of Mick Talbot, Paul Weller inserted several solid soul-tinged pop songs, including “My Ever Changing Moods,” “Headstart for Happiness,” “You’re the Best Thing,” and “Here’s One That Got Away.” However, that doesn’t excuse the rap experiment, “A Gospel.” The album was later released with a slightly different running order as My Ever Changing Moods in the U.S.; the American edition included the U.K. hit “A Solid Bond in Your Heart.” Continue reading “The Style Council – Café Bleu (1984) [2010, Japan, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Gerald Veasley - Velvet (2002) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

On Velvet, bass player extraordinaire Gerald Veasley is as smooth as the title of his sixth solo effort for the Heads Up label implies. Veasley blends a richly textured mix of urban funk, the Philly sound, and his unique bass perspectives to give listeners his rendition of the sounds and sensibilities of the neo-soul movement. Hoff Ensemble – Polarity (2018) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Hoff Ensemble - Polarity (2018) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Polarity is an acoustic jazz project from Jan Gunnar Hoff and the Hoff Ensemble. Of the new release, Hoff writes: ”My main goal is to create a specific identity for each album I make. This time I chose to involve Anders Jormin and Audun Kleive, two of Scandinavia’s finest jazz artists. The result is Polarity, an album based on both new and older compositions of mine, recorded in a unique acoustic setting.” Polarity has been conceived as a cohesive experience where the compositions themselves, the moments of spontaneous inspiration during performance and the natural sound world of the church acoustics all affect the final result. Marlena Shaw – Lookin’ For Love (2003) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Marlena Shaw - Lookin' For Love (2003) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Shaw sings with the ease of absolute mastery, and each feeling she expresses rings true: she’s been there, and more than once. But this doesn’t mean her music is heavy. Her voice is warm and inviting, her time and phrasing impeccable, and where others might communicate pain and despair, she offers wisdom and hope Continue reading “Marlena Shaw – Lookin’ For Love (2003) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

The Church – Starfish (1988) [2021, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

The Church - Starfish (1988) [2021, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Signing to Arista might have seemed an unusual move to start with, getting produced by L.A. studio types like Waddy Wachtel even more so. But for the Church the rewards were great — if sometimes too clean around the corners in comparison to the song-for-song masterpiece Heyday, Starfish set up the band’s well-deserved breakthrough in the States. Kelly Rowland – Simply Deep (2002) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Kelly Rowland - Simply Deep (2002) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

It seems hard to believe now, but at the beginning of 2003, it appeared that underdog Kelly Rowland might usurp her fellow Destiny’s Child member Beyoncé in the solo career stakes, having scored a U.S. chart-topper and a U.K. number one album shortly after her bandmate’s Austin Powers-related “Work It Out” failed to even make it into the Billboard Hot 100. Vocalist Valerie Joyce has been performing as a musician on the Seattle music scene since 1994. Born in Japan to an American father and Japanese mother, she was exposed to classical music through her mother’s piano playing and extensive record collection. After college, she moved to Seattle where she regularly appears with a variety of jazz ensembles. ‘The Look of Love’ is Valerie Joyce’s much-anticipated follow-up to her Chesky debut, featuring elegantly chic original arrangements of classic pieces from Burt Bacharach & Hal David’s extensive catalogue.
