Fiona Joy Hawkins - Christmas Joy (2011) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

In Christmas Joy, Fiona Joy Hawkins has breathed new life into a repertoire of traditional music deeply in need of new perspective and new energy. Both in her unique slant on traditional music and in her own compositions for this recording, Christmas Joy is an utterly brilliant creation. Hespèrion XXI / Jordi Savall - Orient-Occident (1200-1700) (2006) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

AliaVox’s Orient-Occident 1200-1700 is unique in Jordi Savall’s recorded output in that, despite the title, it has no correspondence whatsoever with any specific historical or musicological program. Rather, like the “East meets West” albums pairing violinist Yehudi Menhuin with sitar player Ravi Shankar, Orient-Occident 1200-1700 brings Savall and ace Hespèrion XXI percussionist Pedro Estevan into the orbit of Greek santur player Dimitris Psonis, Israeli oud player Yair Dalal, Moroccan oudist Driss El Maloumi, and three Afghan traditional musicians — Osman Ahrman, Khaled Arman, and Siar Hashimi. Sly & The Family Stone – There’s A Riot Goin’ On (1971) [2013, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Sly & The Family Stone - There's A Riot Goin' On (1971) [2013, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

It’s easy to write off There’s a Riot Goin’ On as one of two things — Sly Stone’s disgusted social commentary or the beginning of his slow descent into addiction. It’s both of these things, of course, but pigeonholing it as either winds up dismissing the album as a whole, since it is so bloody hard to categorize. No collection of soundtracks could possibly be complete without this acknowledged master of movie music. His soundtrack for the award-winning movie The Mission includes music in the Andes/South American style performed with the group Incantation, notably on “On Earth as It Is in Heaven.” Other sections are performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, with powerful choral parts. The struggle for independence is vividly portrayed through the haunting musical score. Empty Sky was followed by Elton John, a more focused and realized record that deservedly became his first hit. John and Bernie Taupin’s songwriting had become more immediate and successful; in particular, John’s music had become sharper and more diverse, rescuing Taupin’s frequently nebulous lyrics. Isaac Hayes – The Isaac Hayes Movement (1970) [2004, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Isaac Hayes - The Isaac Hayes Movement (1970) [2004, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Although this is Isaac Hayes’ third long-player, he had long been a staple of the Memphis R&B scene — primarily within the Stax coterie — where his multiple talents included instrumentalist, arranger, and composer of some of the most beloved soul music of the ’60s. Along with his primary collaborator, David Porter, Hayes was responsible for well over 200 sides — including the genre-defining “When Something Is Wrong With My Baby,” “Soul Man,” “B-A-B-Y,” “Hold On, I’m Comin’,” and “I Had a Dream.” As a solo artist however, Hayes redefined the role of the long-player with his inimitably smooth narrative style of covering classic pop and R&B tracks, many of which would spiral well over ten minutes.
