Sure to remain a top seller on the classical charts for some time to come, Yo-Yo Ma Plays Ennio Morricone is a new installment in the great cellist’s long series of crossover albums. It diverges from most of the others, however, in its collaborative aspect: the music’s original creator, Morricone, had as much to do with this album as did Ma and his creative team. Morricone’s career in film music began during the era of the spaghetti Western in the 1960s and has flourished ever since, on both sides of the Atlantic. The idea of John Eliot Gardiner not only doing Holst’s The Planets, but doing it so effectively, shouldn’t have come as a surprise, considering his broad musical culture and the success he has always had with large-scale works. His interpretation is quite reminiscent of Sir Adrian Boult’s mid-’60s account with the same orchestra (then called the New Philharmonia)–tasteful yet full of character, impeccably played, energetic, fresh. On top of that, the recording is breathtaking. There is extraordinary inner detail, with string tone that is natural (as is the timbre of winds and high percussion) and an astonishing amount of weight in the bass. The coupling, Percy Grainger’s The Warriors, is a wonderfully erudite touch–just what we should expect from Gardiner–and a romp for him and the orchestra. Talk about all-star groups — this quintet date matches together vibraphonist Gary Burton with pianist Chick Corea, guitarist Pat Metheny, bassist Dave Holland, and drummer Roy Haynes. Burton and Corea have recorded frequently through the years, while Metheny gained some early fame working with Burton; Holland was with Corea in Miles Davis’ late-’60s group, and Haynes was formerly with both Burton and Corea. However, not all of these musicians had played together before — Corea had never worked with Metheny previously, nor Burton with Holland. In 1982 pianist Dave Brubeck welcomed clarinetist Bill Smith (who he had played with back in his octet days in the late ’40s) as a permanent member of his Quartet along with drummer Randy Jones and Chris Brubeck on electric bass and occasional bass trombone. This album features the new Quartet at the Concord Jazz Festival playing what would become their typical mixture of songs: three Brubeck compositions (“Benjamin,” “Koto Song” and “Softly, William, Softly”), a standard (“Black and Blue”) and yet another remake of “Take Five.” These are fine performances. This matchup by pianist Gene Harris and tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton, in a quintet that also includes guitarist Herb Ellis, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Harold Jones, is fun although it does not reach the excitement level one might expect. The ballads work best, while the stomps never really catch fire or explode. Harris and Hamilton always play at a high level, but their collaboration falls short of being the expected classic despite some good moments.
