The third part to be released of the new Dutch Ring, assembled from live performances of the partly recast revival of Pierre Audi’s staging, continues Hartmut Haenchen’s intriguing use of the small detail in the New Critical Edition scores. The study of timpani and percussion instructions results in a ferocious cannonade that launches the rainbow bridge to Valhalla without need of John Culshaw’s sheet metal and trick acoustics for Decca. A quote from the composer opens the liner notes: “The human voice is the most perfect instrument of all.” Arvo Pärt clearly knows how to write for it, and the performers assembled for these recordings handle the material with like-minded respect. De Profundis is a deeply reverent collection of works written and/or arranged for choir in a style the composer is credited for inventing, the tintinnabuli. Since the mid-1980s, Frank Peter Zimmermann has earned recognition as one of the leading violinists, admired not only for his technical skill and interpretive intelligence, but also for his versatility in a wide-ranging repertoire. His extensive discography spans from Bach concertos and Beethoven sonatas to works by composers such as Ligeti, Magnus Lindberg and Brett Dean. But during the four decades that Zimmermann has been making recordings, he has never previously recorded Bach’s Sei solo, the six sonatas and partitas for solo violin which form an absolute pinnacle in the repertoire for the instrument. It was when Delphine Constantin-Reznik took up the post as harpist in the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra that she first came across the name Anton Pratté, well-known in his lifetime as a harpist and composer. Her research into the music and activities of this forgotten master has now resulted in the very first recording of any of his numerous compositions for the harp. Anton Edvard Pratté was born in Bohemia into a family that ran a touring puppet theatre. He came to Sweden as an adolescent, and soon made a name for himself, performing music of his own as well as by others. Both Schumann and Mussorgsky were wildly imaginative composers who found ways of expression that went beyond the conventional. On this recording, pianist Kirill Gerstein offers an unusual yet logical pairing of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and Schumann’s Carnaval – piano pieces in which the layer of the visual and the illustrative gives way to subtler and more personal meanings. Wagner is the giant among composers because he created his own world. Whereas others interpreted ancient and familiar mythology, Wagner created his own myth. Whereas others composed to librettos by poets, Wagner wrote his own texts. He evenbuilt his own opera house, which had to be different and innovative. Jacques Loussier came up with his Play Bach jazz conceptions while still in the conservatory around 1950. He started recording them in 1959, and he’s been at it ever since, adapting other classical composers along the way, but always returning to Bach. It made sense then, and it makes sense now, for Bach’s linear, continuo-driven, contrapuntal style has always implied a swinging pulse; even some inspired, if strictly score-bound classical recordings of Bach sound as if they are poised for takeoff.
