Pianist and singer Patricia Barber’s second album (and major-label debut) is a consistently interesting, but not always completely rewarding, array of original instrumentals, vocal standards, and surprise cover versions. Companion was recorded in a special three-night series of shows in July, 1999 at Chicago’s famed Green Mill jazz club — an unusually short amount of time to produce a live album. To mine as much material as possible from those nights the performances were run more like recording sessions than live shows, with the crowd reverently hushed. The GSC compilation 36 All-Time Greatest Hits does offer three-dozen solid songs by Dinah Shore, one of America’s foremost entertainers from the ’40s to the ’60s, though they’re scattered across three discs and the performances are of a dodgy vintage. The note on the back — “All tracks originally recorded prior to 1972” — might soothe the fears of some, but it raises more questions than it answers: at what point in Shore’s career were these recorded, and with whom? Unfortunately, buyers are no wiser after unwrapping the CD than they were before. Continue reading “Dinah Shore – 36 All-Time Greatest Hits (1999) [3CD]”

Koine is Rita Marcotulli’s second release following her earlier album The Light Side of the Moon which features a track made famous by Pink Floyd. Marcotulli is a jazz singer, pianist, and composer who always has a thread that connects her albums. Which explains why this album shares the title song (“Koine”) with her prior album along with 10 more of her original compositions. Three years after the last album, Koiné, Rita Marcotulli comes out with her first recording in solitude. A work that her admirers have been waiting for for a long time and that the pianist develops along the delicate ridge on which she has always moved when she produces things in her own name, straddling the many stylistic fields within which she has always worked very well in the his career. Listening to Miles Davis’ originally released version of In a Silent Way in light of the complete sessions released by Sony in 2001 (Columbia Legacy 65362) reveals just how strategic and dramatic a studio construction it was. If one listens to Joe Zawinul’s original version of “In a Silent Way,” it comes across as almost a folk song with a very pronounced melody. The version Miles Davis and Teo Macero assembled from the recording session in July of 1968 is anything but. There is no melody, not even a melodic frame. Nefertiti, the fourth album by Miles Davis’ second classic quintet, continues the forward motion of Sorcerer, as the group settles into a low-key, exploratory groove, offering music with recognizable themes — but themes that were deliberately dissonant, slightly unsettling even as they burrowed their way into the consciousness. In a sense, this is mood music, since, like on much of Sorcerer, the individual parts mesh in unpredictable ways, creating evocative, floating soundscapes. With the 1968 album Miles in the Sky, Miles Davis explicitly pushed his second great quintet away from conventional jazz, pushing them toward the jazz-rock hybrid that would later become known as fusion. Here, the music is still in its formative stages, and it’s a little more earth-bound than you might expect, especially following on the heels of the shape-shifting, elusive Nefertiti. Since it’s billed as “Directions in Music by Miles Davis,” it should come as little surprise that Filles de Kilimanjaro is the beginning of a new phase for Miles, the place that he begins to dive headfirst into jazz-rock fusion. It also happens to be the swan song for his second classic quintet, arguably the finest collective of musicians he ever worked with, and what makes this album so fascinating is that it’s possible to hear the breaking point Continue reading “Miles Davis – Filles De Kilimanjaro (1968) [2015, MFSL Remastered, CD-Layer + Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Sorcerer, the third album by the second Miles Davis Quintet, is in a sense a transitional album, a quiet, subdued affair that rarely blows hot, choosing to explore cerebral tonal colorings. Even when the tempo picks up, as it does on the title track, there’s little of the dense, manic energy on Miles Smiles — this is about subtle shadings, even when the compositions are as memorable as Tony Williams’ “Pee Wee” or Herbie Hancock’s “Sorcerer.” Continue reading “Miles Davis – Sorcerer (1967) [2015, MFSL Remastered, CD-Layer + Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Vibraphonist Cal Tjader is in typically fine form on this live set from 1968. His quintet at the time featured Armand Perazza on congas and pianist Joe Kloess and his repertoire ranged from Afro-Cuban jazz to occasional straightahead tunes. Six of the eight selections on this date are originals by band members or Gary McFarland. Although Tjader had been playing this style of music for 15 years by this time, he still was quite creative and enthusiastic, and is heard throughout in excellent form. Michel Legrand has spent most of his life as a composer in the studios and for films, but this release is a jazz classic. Legrand took 11 famous jazz compositions and arranged them for three different groups. Tenor great Ben Webster, flutist Herbie Mann, four trombonists, and a rhythm section perform pieces by Duke Ellington, Earl Hines, Django Reinhardt (“Nuages”), and the Count Basie-associated “Blue and Sentimental.” Continue reading “Michel Legrand – Legrand Jazz (1958) [2017, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Blues in Orbit lacks the intellectual cache of the suites and concept pieces that loomed large in Ellington’s recordings of this period, but it’s an album worth tracking down, if only to hear the band run through a lighter side of its sound — indeed, it captures the essence of a late-night recording date that was as much a loose jam as a formal studio date, balancing the spontaneity of the former and the technical polish of the latter.
