One of three trio albums that pianist Keith Jarrett recorded with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette during the same month, this second volume of Standards gets the edge over the first due to its slightly more challenging material. Jarrett, who has often taken himself a bit too seriously, is surprisingly playful at times in this format. In addition to Jarrett’s “So Tender,” there are such superior songs explored on this date as Alec Wilder’s “Moon and Sand,” “If I Should Lose You” and “I Fall in Love Too Easily.” Bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette listen closely to Jarrett and no matter what direction the pianist turns, they are already there waiting for him. This SACD (DSD) sampler from Concord Jazz has stunning audio, so there’s that. But beyond there is also and nice mix of varying jazz tracks taken from previously released albums within their label. Favorites will certainly depend on what you like as songs range from the opening reggae infused track, “Reggae-Later” by Monty Alexander’s Ivory & Steel to “The Real Blues,” a live recording by The Ray Brown Trio to a solo piano tune called “Silent Pool” which closes out the album. When Ying Tan told me that Jacintha’s second album for Groove Note would be a collection of Johnny Mercer songs, I felt a quickening of the pulse. Here surely would be a recital of rare sympathy: one of the most purely romantic of all lyricists interpreted by one of the most ravishingly beautiful voices to come along in jazz and popular music this last quarter century.
