Blondie turned to British pop producer Mike Chapman for their third album, on which they abandoned any pretensions to new wave legitimacy (just in time, given the decline of the new wave) and emerged as a pure pop band. After Service is the second live album by Yellow Magic Orchestra, directly following their (at the time) final studio album, Service. The album features former ABC member David Palmer on additional drums. A film version was released alongside the album. After Service features “Kageki na Shukujo” (過激な淑女 “Radical Lady”), which was released in a studio version as a single, but does not feature on any of their albums (compilations excepted). Service was the seventh and, at the time, final studio album by Yellow Magic Orchestra. The band dissolved the following year after a world tour, but would later reform in 1993 for a one-off reunion album, Technodon. Like ×∞Multiplies, it contains a mixture of YMO songs and comedy sketches performed by Super Eccentric Theater, or S.E.T. The first Dutch/German edition of the album omitted the sketches, effectively cutting the album’s length in half. In 1999, the album was remastered under Hosono’s supervision with new liner notes provided by lyricist Peter Barakan. Posturing themselves as the synth-pop stars they already were (though only strictly speaking), Naughty Boys is more of a landmark for Japanese pop than electronic music. Beginning with the synth-pop hit “Kimi Ni Mune Kyun” (featuring vocals just as accomplished as its production), the album clearly sounds different; previous YMO material had never sounded explicitly like Asian pop music before. That said, it’s still a solid album of commercial synth-pop and showed the group was still cultivating their Western connections, with help from guitarist Bill Nelson. BGM stands for “background music,” and one could be mistaken for thinking that this is an album of ambient-sounding tracks. Instead, it’s a continuation of YMO’s techno aesthetic, focusing more on Takahashi’s distorted vocals and similarly liquid synth sounds, which give much of the album a melancholic air.
