Indochine is a French pop rock and new wave band formed in Paris in 1981. They became very successful in the Francophonie, Europe and Latin America in the 1980s, with songs like “L’Aventurier” and “Canary Bay”. Following the release of several critically acclaimed, but commercially unsuccessful, albums in the 1990s, the group returned to stardom with the release of Paradize in 2002. This one-off collaboration between the Cure’s Robert Smith and Siouxsie & the Banshees’ Steven Severin resulted in an eccentric, and at times incompatible, mix of psychedelic sounds wrapped around alternative ’80s pop. Writers Smith and Severin’s more eccentric tendencies are as likely to evoke pictures of a carnival as a funereal march, but the backbone rests largely on tightly constructed tunes with occasional forays into the experimental. When it was released, Trans was Neil Young’s most baffling album. He had employed a vocoder to synthesize his voice on five of the album’s nine tracks, resulting in disembodied singing, the lyrics nearly impossible to decipher without the lyric sheet. And even when you read the words, “Computer Age,” “We R in Control,” “Transformer Man,” “Computer Cowboy,” and “Sample and Hold” seemed like a vague mishmash of high-tech jargon. With guests including David Sylvian, Heaven 17’s Glenn Gregory, and Steve Howe, A Secret Wish is synth-rock with an eye toward orchestrated pop as well as a bit of sampler experimentation in the grand ZTT tradition of Art of Noise. There’s a distinct lack of songwriting on the album, and though the synth-grooves are tight enough to keep it flowing for most of its length, A Secret Wish occasionally falls flat from its own weight. During 2019, Blondie was invited to perform in Havana, Cuba as part of a cultural exchange through the Cuban Ministry of Culture. This was a 40-year ambition come especially for songwriter & guitarist Chris Stein, who had longed to visit Cuba for most of his life. Artist and director Rob Roth documented this special moment and career highlight by shooting a short film titled ‘Blondie: Vivir En La Habana’. Released in July 2021 on limited edition pale blue vinyl to accompany the film which will feature throughout 2021 in many prominent film festivals inc. the Tribeca Film Festival. Despite Jackson’s anxious demeanor and shaky pop/rock presence, I’m the Man holds together quite well as his second attempt. Reaching number 12 in the U.K. and a respectable number 22 in the U.S., the album managed to net him a number five hit in his homeland with the insightful “It’s Different for Girls,” which revealed Jackson’s adeptness at philosophizing and his perception of examining the sexes, a trait which would follow him throughout his career.
