The Wallflowers – The Wallflowers (1992)

The Wallflowers - The Wallflowers (1992)

The Wallflowers – Bringing Down The Horse (1996)

The Wallflowers - Bringing Down The Horse (1996)

No sophomore jinx here. Of course, there are only two Wallflowers left from their first release, so this could be called a whole new band. No matter, because the music here is assured and contemporary with just enough of the past showing through to catch one’s eye. Jakob Dylan has been polishing his compositional chops and it really shows on such cuts as “Invisible City,” the hit “6th Avenue Heartache” and especially “One Headlight.” A fine effort indeed. Ever since the Smiths cut Twinkle’s 1965 obscurity “Golden Lights” in 1986, Morrissey has exhibited a knack for curious covers. Usually, he saved other people’s songs for the stage, sometimes sneaking a tune onto a B-side, but he never dedicated himself to covering his favorite tunes until 2019’s California Son. Papa Roach – F.E.A.R. (2015) [Japanese SHM-CD Edition]

Papa Roach - F.E.A.R. (2015) [Japanese SHM-CD Edition]

The ninth studio album from California’s Papa Roach, 2015’s F.E.A.R. finds the journeyman hard rock outfit delivering more of its bombastic, high-energy sound. F.E.A.R. was produced by Kevin Churko (Ozzy Osbourne, Five Finger Death Punch) with assistance from his son Kane Churko, and the album’s title is an acronym that stands for “Face Everything And Rise.” The dark, aggressive irony behind this sentiment remains Continue reading “Papa Roach – F.E.A.R. A cursory glance at A Moon Shaped Pool may suggest a certain measure of indifference on the part of Radiohead. Its 11 songs are sequenced in alphabetical order—a stunt befitting a Pixies concert or perhaps a Frank Black box set, not a proper album—and many of these tunes are of an older vintage: the group began work on the opener “Burn The Witch” at the turn of the century, while the closing “True Love Waits” first appeared in concerts way back in 1995. In the End is the eighth and final studio album by the Irish alternative rock band The Cranberries, released on 26 April 2019 from BMG. It is the band’s first release since the death of singer Dolores O’Riordan, who died of drowning due to alcohol intoxication on 15 January 2018, though her vocals are featured posthumously. The surviving instrumentalists pieced together her demos with in-studio recordings over the course of the subsequent year and worked with long-time producer Stephen Street to finalize the album. Critical reception has been positive. Continue reading “The Cranberries – In The End (2019) [Hi-Res] [Official Digital Release]”

Beck – Discography (1993 – 2014)

Beck - Discography (1993 - 2014)

Initially pegged as the voice of a generation when “Loser” turned into a smash crossover success, Beck wound up crystallizing much of the postmodern ruckus inherent in the ’90s alternative explosion, but in unexpected ways. Based in the underground anti-folk and noise-rock worlds, Beck encompassed all manner of modern music, drawing in hip-hop, blues, trash rock, pop, soul, lounge music — pretty much any found sound or vinyl dug up from a dusty crate — blurring boundaries and encapsulating how ’90s hipsters looked toward the future by foraging through the past. Clocking in at 45 minutes, Matthew Sweet’s third record of guitar-dominated, hook-laden power pop runs through its 12 songs at a classic speed, piling up songs that lovingly conform to the three-minute pop tradition. Richard Lloyd’s gnarled guitars save Sweet’s melodies and harmonies from being saccharine or sappy. Continue reading “Matthew Sweet – 100% Fun (1995) {2018, Reissue, Hi-Res SACD Rip}”

Faith No More – Discography (1985-2015)

Faith No More - Discography (1985-2015)

With their fusion of heavy metal, funk, hip-hop, and progressive rock, Faith No More have earned a substantial cult following. By the time they recorded their first album in 1985, the band had already had a string of lead vocalists, including Courtney Love; their debut, We Care a Lot, featured Chuck Mosley’s abrasive vocals but was driven by Jim Martin’s metallic guitar. Faith No More’s next album, 1987’s Introduce Yourself, was a more cohesive and impressive effort; for the first time, the rap and metal elements didn’t sound like they were fighting each other Continue reading “Faith No More – Discography (1985-2015)”

Korn – Discography (1994 – 2014)

Korn - Discography (1994 - 2014)

Korn’s cathartic alternative metal sound positioned the group among the most popular and provocative to emerge during the post-grunge era. Korn began their existence as the Bakersfield, California-based metal band LAPD, which included guitarists James “Munky” Shaffer and Brian “Head” Welch, bassist Reginald “Fieldy Snuts” Arvizu, and drummer David Silveria. After issuing an LP in 1993, the members of LAPD crossed paths with Jonathan Davis, a mortuary science student moonlighting as the lead vocalist for the local group Sexart. They soon asked Davis to join the band, and upon his arrival the quintet rechristened itself Korn. Continue reading “Korn – Discography (1994 – 2014)”
