To celebrate their 20th anniversary — marked from the release of Ten, not their formation — Pearl Jam launched a multimedia project called Pearl Jam Twenty, spearheaded by a Cameron Crowe-directed documentary to which this double-disc set provides the nominal soundtrack, both supplemented by a memorabilia-laden coffeetable book. It’s a project not dissimilar to The Beatles Anthology and, appropriately enough, the PJ20 soundtrack is a weird hodgepodge of demos, alternate tracks, outtakes, and live cuts all culled together under a title that suggests it has broader appeal than it does. Beneath the Eyrie is the seventh album from American alternative rock band Pixies, released on September 13, 2019 by BMG/Infectious. Produced by Tom Dalgety, and preceded by the singles, “On Graveyard Hill” and “Catfish Kate”, the album was recorded in a remote, converted church in upstate New York. No sophomore jinx here. Of course, there are only two Wallflowers left from their first release, so this could be called a whole new band. No matter, because the music here is assured and contemporary with just enough of the past showing through to catch one’s eye. Jakob Dylan has been polishing his compositional chops and it really shows on such cuts as “Invisible City,” the hit “6th Avenue Heartache” and especially “One Headlight.” A fine effort indeed. A cursory glance at A Moon Shaped Pool may suggest a certain measure of indifference on the part of Radiohead. Its 11 songs are sequenced in alphabetical order—a stunt befitting a Pixies concert or perhaps a Frank Black box set, not a proper album—and many of these tunes are of an older vintage: the group began work on the opener “Burn The Witch” at the turn of the century, while the closing “True Love Waits” first appeared in concerts way back in 1995. In the End is the eighth and final studio album by the Irish alternative rock band The Cranberries, released on 26 April 2019 from BMG. It is the band’s first release since the death of singer Dolores O’Riordan, who died of drowning due to alcohol intoxication on 15 January 2018, though her vocals are featured posthumously. The surviving instrumentalists pieced together her demos with in-studio recordings over the course of the subsequent year and worked with long-time producer Stephen Street to finalize the album. Initially pegged as the voice of a generation when “Loser” turned into a smash crossover success, Beck wound up crystallizing much of the postmodern ruckus inherent in the ’90s alternative explosion, but in unexpected ways. Based in the underground anti-folk and noise-rock worlds, Beck encompassed all manner of modern music, drawing in hip-hop, blues, trash rock, pop, soul, lounge music — pretty much any found sound or vinyl dug up from a dusty crate — blurring boundaries and encapsulating how ’90s hipsters looked toward the future by foraging through the past.
