As the lead singer of the Animals, Eric Burdon was one of the British Invasion’s most distinctive vocalists, with a searingly powerful blues-rock voice. When the first lineup of the group fell apart in 1966, Burdon kept the Animals’ name going with various players for a few years. Usually billed as Eric Burdon & the Animals, the group was essentially Burdon’s vehicle, which he used to purvey a far more psychedelic and less R&B-oriented vision. History shows us there are plenty of bands where the whole is more than the sum of the parts, and Neil Young & Crazy Horse are a great example of how the right combination of musicians can create a tide that lifts all boats. Though Crazy Horse never do anything especially complicated, the loose but thoroughly deep groove they generate fits Young’s musical ideas better than nearly any of his collaborators Continue reading “Neil Young & Crazy Horse – Way Down In The Rust Bucket (2021) [CD-Quality + Hi-Res] [Official Digital Release]”

Following his 1970 departure from the Guess Who, guitarist Randy Bachman recorded a solo album (Axe) and planned a project with ex-Nice keyboardist Keith Emerson (later canceled due to illness) before forming Bachman-Turner Overdrive in 1972. Originally called “Brave Belt,” the metal group was comprised of singer/guitarist Bachman, fellow Guess Who alum Chad Allan, bassist C.F. “Fred” Turner, and Randy’s brother, drummer Robbie; after a pair of LPs (Brave Belt I and Brave Belt II), Allan was replaced by another Bachman brother, guitarist Tim, and in homage to the trucker’s magazine Overdrive, the unit became BTO. Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s Four Wheel Drive album is most often overlooked, mainly because all of the attention was focused on the singable “na na na naa”‘s of one of B.T.O.’s biggest hits in “Hey You.” But the rest of the album is made up of the band’s lunch-pail rock & roll sound, combining ample amounts of factory-made blues to street-dirty guitar rock. Ben Davies called Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s first album a “fusion of Lynyrd Skynyrd-style Southern/trucker rock and ZZ Top’s anthemic arena rock,” and with their logo imprinted in a big metallic gear which looks like it inspired James Cameron’s Terminator trademark, Randy Bachman, his brothers Tim and Robbie, and C.F. Turner dish out a methodical mix of plodding hard dirges. Continue reading “Bachman-Turner Overdrive – Bachman-Turner Overdrive (1973) [2020, Remastered, WEB Hi-Res]”

Eric Clapton’s new millennium has largely been defined by collaborations with friends, beginning with a duet album with B.B. King following through with a Cream reunion and closing with tours with his former Blind Faith running mate, Steve Winwood. Clapton and Winwood did three concerts together at Madison Square Garden in February 2008 and the results were fruitful enough to spawn this double-disc album — along with its accompanying DVD set — and a moderately scaled 2009 tour. Greendale ranks as one of the more elaborate projects Neil Young ever conceived, a concept album inspired by Thornton Wilder’s Our Town which was accompanied by a film telling the record’s story — the film was then used as a backdrop for a theatrical production featuring Young and Crazy Horse.
