Bachman-Turner Overdrive – Not Fragile (1974) [2011, Audio Fidelity Remastered]

Bachman-Turner Overdrive - Not Fragile (1974) [2011, Audio Fidelity Remastered]

After gaining some recognition from the success of the band’s previous album, Bachman-Turner Overdrive got around to recording Not Fragile. Not only had one of the three Bachman brothers (Tim, the rhythm guitarist) left the band to BTO’s advantage, but Randy Bachman and C.F. Turner had clearly grown musically. Joe Walsh – Greatest Hits Little Did He Know… (1997)

Joe Walsh - Greatest Hits Little Did He Know... (1997)

The double-disc Look What I Did! was simply too much for anyone but the dedicated Joe Walsh fan, which makes the release of the 15-song, single-disc Joe Walsh’s Greatest Hits: Little Did He Know so welcome. Drawing highlights from his solo career and his early records with the James Gang, Greatest Hits contains almost every song that most fans would want Continue reading “Joe Walsh – Greatest Hits Little Did He Know… (1997)”

In the End is the eighth and final studio album by the Irish alternative rock band The Cranberries, released on 26 April 2019 from BMG. It is the band’s first release since the death of singer Dolores O’Riordan, who died of drowning due to alcohol intoxication on 15 January 2018, though her vocals are featured posthumously. The surviving instrumentalists pieced together her demos with in-studio recordings over the course of the subsequent year and worked with long-time producer Stephen Street to finalize the album. Critical reception has been positive. Continue reading “The Cranberries – In The End (2019) [Hi-Res] [Official Digital Release]”

The B-52s – Cosmic Thing (1989) [2010, Audio Fidelity, HDCD Remastered]

The B-52s - Cosmic Thing (1989) [2010, Audio Fidelity, HDCD Remastered]

Many observers were prepared to write off the B-52’s after the release of Bouncing Off the Satellites. Granted, the album was completed in the wake of Ricky Wilson’s death, but the group appeared bereft of new musical ideas and were sounding rather stale. Mötley Crüe – The Dirt Soundtrack (2019)

Mötley Crüe - The Dirt Soundtrack (2019)

Biopic The Dirt tells the story of Mötley Crüe’s wild ride through their time as one of the most popular and most debaucherous bands of the metal years. During a blistering run that lasted the entirety of the ’80s, the L.A. band sold millions of records, toured the world, and challenged death constantly with reckless behavior, substance abuse, and the kind of mayhem that sometimes seems like it only existed in the time when hair metal reigned. Some of these misadventures were collected in the 2001 book The Dirt, and the 2019 film adaptation of the book further dramatizes some of the group’s already unbelievable antics, as well as getting into the music that made it all happen. Santana – Santana IV (2016)

Santana - Santana IV (2016)

Two years in the making, Santana IV marks the reunion of nearly all members of the 1971-1972 band, arguably its greatest lineup. Carlos Santana, conguero Michael Carabello, organist/lead vocalist Gregg Rolie, drummer Michael Shrieve, and guitarist Neal Schon cut the landmark Santana III in 1971. It was a short-lived group as Schon and Rolie would depart in early 1973 to form Journey. Continue reading “Santana – Santana IV (2016)”

The Spencer Davis Group – The Best Of The Spencer Davis Group (1987)

The Spencer Davis Group - The Best Of The Spencer Davis Group (1987)

Somehow the same label issued two albums with the same name in the same year. This one, with 15 tracks, is vastly preferable to its 10-song counterpart. Both releases hit the high points with the irresistible “Gimme Some Lovin’,” “I’m a Man,” and others. With half as many tunes, though, this album includes the minor hit “Strong Love” and “Goodbye Stevie,” written by the group to commemorate the departure of sensational singer and multi-instrumentalist prodigy Steve Winwood. “Waltz for Lumumba” presages the jazzier turns he would take with Traffic. Michael Schenker Group - The Best Of The Michael Schenker Group 1980-1984 (2008)

Apart from his classic work with UFO, from a pure heavy metal and hard rock standpoint, most metalheads consider Michael Schenker’s 1980-1984 solo period to be his high-water mark. And after checking out the 2008 compilation Best of the Michael Schenker Group 1980-1984, you’ll understand why. After splitting from the aforementioned UFO, it appeared as though Schenker was on a mission to show the world that his exit from the band Continue reading “Michael Schenker Group – The Best Of The Michael Schenker Group 1980-1984 (2008)”

Todd Rundgren – Something / Anything? (1972) [2018, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Todd Rundgren - Something / Anything? (1972) [2018, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

After two albums, Todd Rundgren had one hit and a burgeoning cult following, plus growing respect as a hitmaking record producer. There’s no question he was busy, but as it turns out, all this work only scratched the surface of his ambition. He had decided to abandon the Runt pretense and recorded a full double album by himself (save for one side). Others had recorded one-man albums before, most notably Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney, but Rundgren — without borrowing musically from either artist — captured the homemade ambience of McCartney with the visionary feel of Music of My Mind, adding an encyclopedic knowledge of pop music from Gilbert & Sullivan through Jimi Hendrix, plus the crazed zeal of a pioneer. Beck – Discography (1993 – 2014)

Beck - Discography (1993 - 2014)

Initially pegged as the voice of a generation when “Loser” turned into a smash crossover success, Beck wound up crystallizing much of the postmodern ruckus inherent in the ’90s alternative explosion, but in unexpected ways. Based in the underground anti-folk and noise-rock worlds, Beck encompassed all manner of modern music, drawing in hip-hop, blues, trash rock, pop, soul, lounge music — pretty much any found sound or vinyl dug up from a dusty crate — blurring boundaries and encapsulating how ’90s hipsters looked toward the future by foraging through the past. Ringo Starr – Discography (1970 – 2015)

Ringo Starr - Discography (1970 - 2015)

Ringo Starr, born Richard Starkey, was the drummer in the Beatles from 1962 to 1970 and thus became one of the most famous musicians of the ’60s. Though the least prominent member of the quartet, he distinguished himself as an occasional singer of good-natured material and as an actor. Upon the group’s split, Starr went solo with two novelty projects: the first, an album called Sentimental Journey, found him covering pre-rock standards, and the second, Beaucoups of Blues, was a country music collection. Starr then scored Top Ten hits with two non-album singles, “It Don’t Come Easy” in 1971 and “Back Off Boogaloo” in 1972. Continue reading “Ringo Starr – Discography (1970 – 2015)”

Suzi Quatro – No Control (2019)

Suzi Quatro - No Control (2019)

The American rock vocalist has successfully worked as a musician for more than fifty years, delivering with unbridled energy her greatest hits such as ‘Can The Can’, ‘48 Crash’, ‘Devil Gate Drive’, ‘If You Can`t Give Me Love’, ‘She`s In Love With You’ or ‘Stumblin In‘ which made her an icon in the 1970s, and wowing her fans again and again with her new material. So it comes as no surprise that she’s not thinking of retiring. “I’ll retire when I go onstage, shake my ass, and there is silence,” she says, fully aware of the fact that that moment is still a long way off. 29 March 2019 will see the arrival of Suzi’s latest studio album, simply entitled No Control in line with her need for artistic freedom, on SPV/Steamhammer. Almost simultaneously, the singer/musician is set to embark on an extensive World tour. No doubt about it: 2019 will be another Suzi year! Continue reading “Suzi Quatro – No Control (2019)”
