Five vintage albums from ’70s hitmakers the Doobie Brothers are included in this special box set. Released in 1971, The Doobie Brothers was the group’s first album, and finds the Doobies beginning to work out the sound that would make them famous. Livin’ on the Fault Line from 1977 would prove to be their last album with guitarist and founder Tom Johnston, and found them expanding their jazz influences. This five-disc set in the Rhino Flashback Original Album Series collects the Warner Bros. albums Toulouse Street (1972), The Captain and Me (1973), What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits (1974), Stampede (1975), and Takin’ It to the Streets (1976) in a single package. Originally a hard-driving rocker in the vein of fellow Michigan garage rockers the Rationals and Mitch Ryder, Bob Seger developed into one of the most popular heartland rockers over the course of the ’70s. Combining the driving charge of Ryder’s Detroit Wheels with Stonesy garage rock and devotion to hard-edged soul and R&B, he crafted a distinctively American sound. While he never attained the critical respect of his contemporary Bruce Springsteen, Seger did develop a dedicated following through constant touring with his Silver Bullet Band. This latest compilation of Jim’s music is both interesting and valid in that it combines songs that appeared on his three hit albums with earlier compositions that were works in progress of a singer/songwriter finding his voice and an artist searching for directon. On The Pretender, Jackson Browne took a step back from the precipice so well defined on his first three albums, but doing so didn’t seem to make him feel any better. Employing a real producer, Jon Landau, for the first time, Browne made what sounded like a real contemporary rock record, but this made his songs less effective; the ersatz Mexican arrangement of “Linda Paloma” and the bouncy second half of “Daddy’s Tune,” with its horn charts and guitar solo, undercut the lyrics. Marc Cohn is one of the finest debut albums of the 1990s, and it brought adult piano pop back to the radio. Every song is well-crafted, and Cohn’s singalong choruses, introspective lyrics, and vocal stylings reveal his ’60s soul and ’70s singer/songwriter influences. His voice is rich, but has a roughness that adds emotion when stretching to the upper end of his range while remaining subtle at the lower end. After goth pioneers the Birthday Party called it quits in 1983, singer/songwriter Nick Cave assembled the Bad Seeds, a post-punk supergroup featuring former Birthday Party guitarist Mick Harvey on drums, ex-Magazine bassist Barry Adamson, and Einstürzende Neubauten guitarist Blixa Bargeld. With the Bad Seeds, Cave continued to explore his obsessions with religion, death, love, America, and violence with a bizarre, sometimes self-consciously eclectic hybrid of blues, gospel, rock, and arty post-punk, although in a more subdued fashion than his work with the Birthday Party. Bidding for a popular breakthrough with their second major-label album, Soundgarden suddenly developed a sense of craft, with the result that Badmotorfinger became far and away their most fully realized album to that point. Pretty much everything about Badmotorfinger is a step up from its predecessors — the production is sharper and the music more ambitious, while the songwriting takes a quantum leap in focus and consistency. Signing to a major label, Soundgarden take a step toward the metal mainstream with Louder Than Love, a slow, grinding, detuned mountain of Sabbath/Zeppelin riffs and Chris Cornell wailing. The production is even murkier than usual — this time too much so, as the rest of the band tries to poke its way through Kim Thayil’s guitar squall; additionally, too much of the album drifts along without focus or variety. Sting seemed to tire of pop songs sometime early in the 21st century, wandering away from the format after 2003’s well-mannered Sacred Love. Over the next 13 years, he entertained his esoteric interests — he collaborated on a classical album, he rearranged his old tunes for an orchestra, he reunited the Police, he wrote a musical — before he returned to pop/rock with 2016’s 57th & 9th.
