A slick, carefully crafted follow-up to his debut, Rebel Yell was Billy Idol’s catchiest, most consistent fusion of synth-driven new wave pop and hard rock guitar pyrotechnics (courtesy of Steve Stevens). The eerie ballad “Eyes Without a Face” gave Idol his first U.S. Top Ten hit, while “Flesh for Fantasy” and the title track became MTV staples. Like much of Idol’s solo output, it’s all calculated for maximum appeal, but Rebel Yell also works too well not to be an infectiously guilty pleasure. First off, this 19-disc box is not a complete recorded works of John Mellencamp. It excises his earliest years as Johnny Cougar — a Main Man-inspired moniker that resulted in three albums he’s disowned, but which really aren’t that bad at all — beginning the story with 1979’s John Cougar, the album where he truncated his name and toughened up his sound. It still took him a while until he scored a real breakthrough, and it arrived when he tightened up his attack with the assistance of producer Don Gehman and came up with the often-excellent American Fool Continue reading “John Mellencamp – John Mellencamp 1978-2012 (2013) [19CDs Box Set]”

Over the course of his career, Rod Stewart has had it all. He’s been lauded as the finest singer of his generation, he’s written several songs that turned into modern standards, he sang with the Faces, who rivaled the Rolling Stones in their prime, he had massive commercial success. Stewart also saw his critical respect slip away during the ’80s, when he recorded lightweight pop and although he did record some terrible albums — and he would admit that freely — Stewart will always be remembered as one of rock & roll’s best interpretive singers Continue reading “Rod Stewart – Discography (1969 – 2015)”

Through a combination of zealous righteousness and post-punk experimentalism, U2 became one of the most popular rock & roll bands in the world — equally known for their sweeping sound as for their grandiose statements about politics and religion. Carly Simon’s best album, No Secrets was also her commercial breakthrough, topping the charts and going gold, along with its leadoff single, “You’re So Vain.” That song set the album’s saucy tone, with its air of sexually frank autobiography (“You had me several years ago/When I was still quite naïve”) and its reflections on the jet-set lifestyle.
