Now serving up a third installment of gut-busting, freewheeling, acid-soaked hard rock, I’m a Freak Baby is the gift that keeps on giving. U.K. archivists Grapefruit Records first launched the series in 2016, scooping the cream off the top of England’s heaping barrel of late-1960s/early-’70s sludge rock, only to uncover yet more layers on their 2019 follow-up, I’m a Freak 2 Baby. Like the late ’60s that had just come to a shuddering close, 1970 was a confusing time for music in the U.K. (and everywhere else too). Psychedelia was fading out, bubblegum was on its last bounce, prog was getting fired up, and bands were getting heavier, moving to the country, and searching for mellow vibes. An expansive overview of the year would make for some very eclectic listening; the Grapefruit label chose to narrow the scope down just a bit on their three-disc collection New Moon’s in the Sky: The British Progressive Pop Sounds of 1970. Another captivating entry into their year-specific archival series, Grapefruit Records offers up Beyond the Pale Horizon: The British Progressive Pop Sounds of 1972. Arguing that 1972 was the year that British music finally broke free of the ’60s and began to innovate, this heaping three-disc anthology boasts a typically eclectic array of icons, cult faves, and everything in between. While “progressive” may be the imperative term here, this is by no means a prog rock compilation even if bands like Van der Graaf Generator, Uriah Heep, and Yes are all well-represented. After the musical uncertainty of Waterloo Lily, Caravan returned with their most inspired recording since In the Land of the Grey and Pink. The splendidly titled For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night is several steps ahead in terms of fresh musical ideas that wholly incorporate the band’s trademark humor within the otherwise serious and challenging sonic structures. Two of the more dominant reasons for the change in Caravan’s sound were the return of keyboardist Dave Sinclair and the addition of violist Peter Geoffrey Richardson. A View from the Top of the World is the fifteenth studio album by American progressive metal band Dream Theater, released on October 22, 2021. This is their first album to be recorded at their own studio, DTHQ (Dream Theater Headquarters), as well as their first since Black Clouds & Silver Linings (2009) to include fewer than nine tracks, and the first since Dream Theater (2013) to both contain a track of at least ten minutes in length and end with the longest track.
