The pressure was on Kiss for their fifth release, and the band knew it. Their breakthrough, Alive!, was going to be hard to top, so instead of trying to recreate a concert setting in the studio, they went the opposite route. Destroyer is one of Kiss’ most experimental studio albums, but also one of their strongest and most interesting. Alice Cooper/Pink Floyd producer Bob Ezrin was on hand, and he strongly encouraged the band to experiment — there’s extensive use of sound effects (the album’s untitled closing track), the appearance of a boy’s choir (“Great Expectations”), and an orchestra-laden, heartfelt ballad (“Beth”). Capitol Records compiled a definitive collection of Edith Piaf’s work 30 years after her death; the compilation includes both the well-known (“La Vie en Rose,” “Milord,” “Padam…Padam,” “Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien,” etc.) and the hard to find (including “Johnny Tu N’Es Pas un Ange,” “Un Dimanche à Londres,” “À Quoi Ça Sert l’Amour?,” and “A L’Enseigne de la Fille Sans Coeur,” among others). At only two discs (and 44 songs), it’s impossible to portray the complete picture of the Sparrow, but this is a very nice, manageable set that does a pretty good job. In it, her lyrics are visual and socially relevant, yet intimate, poetic and immediate. Everybody’s in Show-Biz is a double album with one record devoted to stories from the road and another devoted to songs from the road. It could be labeled “the drunkest album ever made,” without a trace of hyperbole, since this is a charmingly loose, rowdy, silly record. It comes through strongest on the live record, of course, as it’s filled with Ray Davies’ notoriously campy vaudevellian routine (dig the impromptu “Banana Boat Song” that leads into “Skin & Bone,” or the rollicking “Baby Face”). Low Budget doesn’t have a narrative like Preservation or Soap Opera, but Ray Davies cleverly designed the album as a sly satire of the recession and oil crisis that gripped America in the late ’70s — thereby satisfying his need to be a wry social commentator while giving American audiences a hook to identify with. It was a clever move that worked; not only did Low Budget become their highest-charting American album (not counting the 1966 Greatest Hits compilation), but it was also a fine set of arena rock, one of the better mainstream hard rock albums of its time.
