Mistaken Identity should have established Kim Carnes as a huge international star. Her Rod Stewart rasp, affiliation with Kenny Rogers, management by Ken Kragen when he was arguably at his peak, makes one wonder why the across-the-board success of “Bette Davis Eyes” couldn’t be duplicated. Three years after the success of this album, Tina Turner actually did conquer the world, the various producers on Private Dancer weaving enough different textures to make for a multi-dimensional masterpiece. Released on the heels of the stilted, static Cahoots, the double-album Rock of Ages occupies a curious yet important place in Band history. Recorded at a spectacular New Years Eve 1971 gig, the show and album were intended to be a farewell of sorts before the Band took an extended break in 1972, but it turned out to be a last hurrah in many different ways, closing the chapter on the first stage of their career, when they were among the biggest and most important rock & roll bands. This is every inch a follow-up to Loggins & Messina, including a ’50s rock & roll pastiche in the style of “Your Mama Don’t Dance” called “My Music” that hit number 16 as a single. Other notable material included Jim Messina’s island-rock anthem “Lahaina” and one of Kenny Loggins’ sensitive but generic ballads, typically called “A Love Song.” Continue reading “Loggins And Messina – Full Sail (1973) [2016, Audio Fidelity Remastered, CD-Layer & Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Santana III is an album that undeservingly stands in the shadows behind the towering legend that is the band’s second album, Abraxas. This was also the album that brought guitarist Neal Schon — who was 17 years old — into the original core lineup of Santana. Percussionist Thomas “Coke” Escovedo was brought in to replace (temporarily) José Chepitó Areas, who had suffered a brain aneurysm, yet who recovered quickly and rejoined the band. If there is one group that embodies progressive rock, it is King Crimson. Led by guitar/Mellotron virtuoso Robert Fripp, during its first five years of existence the band stretched both the language and structure of rock into realms of jazz and classical music, all the while avoiding pop and psychedelic sensibilities. Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson are the creative spark behind Heart, a hard rock group who initially found success in the mid-’70s only to reach greater heights after engineering a major comeback a decade later. The daughters of a Marine Corps captain, Ann (born June 19, 1950) and Nancy (born March 16, 1954) grew up in both Southern California and Taiwan before the Wilson family settled in Seattle, Washington. Joe Walsh’s catalog by this point was two albums strong and of a consistently high quality. Despite a change of lineup for So What — a wide range of musicians is used, including the Eagles’ Don Henley — the sound is very similar to previous releases. A number of classic Walsh tracks are featured, including a more polished version of “Turn to Stone,” originally featured on his debut album, Barnstorm, in a somewhat more riotous style. Countdown to Ecstasy wasn’t half the hit that Can’t Buy a Thrill was, and Steely Dan responded by trimming the lengthy instrumental jams that were scattered across Countdown and concentrating on concise songs for Pretzel Logic. In 1984, Jethro Tull embraced the technological advances of the 1980s to make a record with the then height of technology, augmenting their sound with synthesizer and drum machines. Ian Anderson released his debut solo album ‘Walk Into Light’ the previous year. Now both albums have been extensively remixed by Bruce Soord, using the original drums sounds, plus more natural, traditional drums.
