Joe Cocker’s first three A&M albums form the bedrock of a career that spans over three decades. While Cocker certainly wasn’t always in top form during this stretch — thanks to alcohol problems and questionable comeback moves in the ’80s and ’90s — his early records did inform the classic pub rock sound later credited to proto-punk figures like Graham Parker and Brinsley Schwarz. Chet Baker was a primary exponent of the West Coast school of cool jazz in the early and mid-’50s. As a trumpeter, he had a generally restrained, intimate playing style and he attracted attention beyond jazz for his photogenic looks and singing. But his career was marred by drug addiction. Released in 1970 during the stopgap between Stand! and There’s a Riot Goin’ On, Greatest Hits inadvertently arrived at precisely the right moment, summarizing Sly & the Family Stone’s joyous hit-making run on the pop and R&B charts. Technically, only four songs here reached the Top Ten, with only two others hitting the Top 40, but judging this solely on charts is misleading, since this is simply a peerless singles collection Continue reading “Sly & The Family Stone – Greatest Hits (1970) [2015, Audio Fidelity Remaster, CD-Layer + Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

A hopelessly misunderstood record in its time by Santana fans — they were still reeling from the radical direction shift toward jazz on Caravanserai and praying it was an aberration — it was greeted by Santana devotees with hostility, contrasted with kindness from major-league critics like Robert Palmer. Santana III is an album that undeservingly stands in the shadows behind the towering legend that is the band’s second album, Abraxas. This was also the album that brought guitarist Neal Schon — who was 17 years old — into the original core lineup of Santana. Percussionist Thomas “Coke” Escovedo was brought in to replace (temporarily) José Chepitó Areas, who had suffered a brain aneurysm, yet who recovered quickly and rejoined the band. The San Francisco Bay Area rock scene of the late ’60s was one that encouraged radical experimentation and discouraged the type of mindless conformity that’s often plagued corporate rock. When one considers just how different Santana, Jefferson Airplane, Moby Grape, and the Grateful Dead sounded, it becomes obvious just how much it was encouraged. Before the arrival of Carlos Santana’s eponymous band, the San Francisco rock scene drew the inspiration for its jam-oriented music mainly from blues, rock, and Eastern modalities. Santana added Latin music to the mix, forever changing the course of rock & roll history. On their groundbreaking debut album, the group mix Latin percussion with driving rock grooves. As the 1950s came to a close, Nat King Cole (vocals/piano) continued creating stylish renditions of pop and jazz flavored standards. On Welcome to the Club (1959) the artist teams up with Dave Cavanaugh and the Count Basie combo — minus the maestro himself due to contractual restraints — for one of Cole’s most powerful collections supported by a big band. In fact, it is Cole’s unmistakable ultra-cool intonations that flawlessly reign in the fiery — and at times overbearing — ensemble arrangements. Closure/Continuation is the eleventh studio album by British progressive rock band Porcupine Tree. The album is their first since 2009’s The Incident. Despite public uncertainty of the band’s future after frontman Steven Wilson’s focus on a solo career in 2010, the album was recorded intermittently in complete secrecy among Wilson, Gavin Harrison, and Richard Barbieri across the course of the following decade, without long-time bassist Colin Edwin. In an odd bit of programming, Columbia placed the ballads from Miles Davis’ February 12, 1964, concert on My Funny Valentine and the uptempo romps on this LP. Davis, probably a bit bored by some of his repertoire and energized by the teenage Tony Williams’ drumming, performed many of his standards at an increasingly faster pace as time went on. These versions of “So What,” “Walkin’,” “Four,” “Joshua,” “Seven Steps to Heaven,” and even “There Is No Greater Love” are remarkably rapid, with the themes quickly thrown out before Davis Continue reading “Miles Davis – ‘Four’ & More – Recorded Live In Concert (1966) [2013, MFSL Remastered, CD-Layer + Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Miles Davis’ concert of February 12, 1964, was divided into two LPs, with all of the ballads put on My Funny Valentine. These five lengthy tracks (specifically, “All of You,” “Stella by Starlight,” “All Blues,” “I Thought About You,” and the title cut) put the emphasis on the lyricism of Davis, along with some strong statements from tenor saxophonist George Coleman and freer moments from the young rhythm section of pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Tony Williams.
