As unique as Tomita’s idiom was (and still is), this transcription is rather conservative for him, not as startling nor as playful as those of Debussy and Mussorgsky on his first two RCA albums. Karla Bonoff seems to have had some trouble coming up with material for her second album, which may explain why it took two years (a long time in the ’70s) and contained covers of “When You Walk in the Room” and “The Water Is Wide,” and also why the originals weren’t as uniformly excellent as those on her first album. True, leadoff track “Trouble Again” was a gem (as Linda Ronstadt proved when she recorded it on her Cry Like a Rainstorm — Howl Like the Wind album in 1989), but some of the other material was only pedestrian. To celebrate their 20th anniversary — marked from the release of Ten, not their formation — Pearl Jam launched a multimedia project called Pearl Jam Twenty, spearheaded by a Cameron Crowe-directed documentary to which this double-disc set provides the nominal soundtrack, both supplemented by a memorabilia-laden coffeetable book. It’s a project not dissimilar to The Beatles Anthology and, appropriately enough, the PJ20 soundtrack is a weird hodgepodge of demos, alternate tracks, outtakes, and live cuts all culled together under a title that suggests it has broader appeal than it does. Initially, the Animals’ Retrospective looks like just another greatest-hits compilation recycling the same old tracks already easily available elsewhere. Yawn! Yet, on closer inspection, there’s a big difference with this particular set. These 22 tracks are taken from the ABKCO masters and utilize Direct Stream Digital (DSD), containing both CD and Super Audio CD layers.
