Like the late ’60s that had just come to a shuddering close, 1970 was a confusing time for music in the U.K. (and everywhere else too). Psychedelia was fading out, bubblegum was on its last bounce, prog was getting fired up, and bands were getting heavier, moving to the country, and searching for mellow vibes. An expansive overview of the year would make for some very eclectic listening; the Grapefruit label chose to narrow the scope down just a bit on their three-disc collection New Moon’s in the Sky: The British Progressive Pop Sounds of 1970. Another captivating entry into their year-specific archival series, Grapefruit Records offers up Beyond the Pale Horizon: The British Progressive Pop Sounds of 1972. Arguing that 1972 was the year that British music finally broke free of the ’60s and began to innovate, this heaping three-disc anthology boasts a typically eclectic array of icons, cult faves, and everything in between. While “progressive” may be the imperative term here, this is by no means a prog rock compilation even if bands like Van der Graaf Generator, Uriah Heep, and Yes are all well-represented. The rating of this six-CD set is no joke — yes, Bill Haley was supposed to be an irrelevant artist during the 1960s, but he did, in fact, generate well over 100 good and far-better-than-decent sides that are contained in this set. No, there’s nothing remotely as earth-shattering or important as his best work for Decca from 1954-1955, and even most hardcore fans of that material may find the cost of this set difficult to justify; but take it from someone who shelled out for this box, it’s worth a LOT more than you’d ever guess without hearing it — Haley and his band still knew how to work a song, as demonstrated several dozen times on this set. If ever there were an act that deserved more than it got, it was Johnny Burnette and the Rock ‘n’ Roll Trio. These three young men — Johnny and his brother Dorsey and guitarist extraordinaire Paul Burlison — were the authentic rockabilly article, hailing, like Elvis Presley, from Memphis proper. They were rawer than Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis put together and at their best more exciting to listen to. And while Burnette went on to write hits for Ricky Nelson and score a few of his own, it’s the Rock ‘n’ Roll Trio sides — none of which ever charted — for which he is most remembered. Just two months after the release of his seminal album After The Gold Rush, Neil Young played a solo show at The Shakespeare Theater, Stratford, CT on January 22 1971. The show was filmed and recorded, and the concert shown on German TV later in 1971. In 2020, while Neil and his team were reviewing his Archive for future projects, Neil re-visited the 16mm film and audio recording of this show that had been preserved in the Archive for almost 50 years. Piecing together the tapes and footage, Neil realized that he had the full concert – the film of which is the earliest live footage of Neil performing that is known to exist.
