The cliché about David Bowie says he’s a musical chameleon, adapting himself according to fashion and trends. While such a criticism is too glib, there’s no denying that Bowie demonstrated remarkable skill for perceiving musical trends at his peak in the ’70s. After spending several years in the late ’60s as a mod and as an all-around music-hall entertainer, Bowie reinvented himself as a hippie singer/songwriter. He came to the fore during the swing era of the 1930s and ’40s, helped to define the “sing era” of the ’40s and ’50s, and continued to attract listeners during the rock era that began in the mid-’50s. American singer/songwriter Tori Amos (born Myra Ellen Amos) was one of several female artists who combined the stark, lyrical attack of ’90s alternative rock with a distinctly ’70s musical approach, creating music that fell between the orchestrated meditations of Kate Bush and the stripped-down poetics of Joni Mitchell. In addition, she revived the singer/songwriter traditions of the ’70s while reestablishing the piano as a rock & roll instrument. With her 1992 album, Little Earthquakes, Amos built a dedicated following that expanded with her second album, Under the Pink, before giving way to a decades-spanning legacy. The group’s integration of rock and the avant-garde achieved little commercial success during their existence, but they are now recognized as one of the most influential bands in rock, underground, experimental, and alternative music. Instead of following in the Sugarcubes’ arty guitar rock pretensions, Björk immersed herself in dance and club culture, working with many of the biggest names in the genre, including Nellee Hooper, Underworld, and Tricky. Debut, her first solo effort (except for an Icelandic-only smash released when she was just 11 years old), not only established her new artistic direction, but it became an international hit, making her one of the most unlikely stars of the ’90s. An integral part of the early 1980s thrash metal movement, New Jersey quartet Overkill were formed in 1980 by vocalist Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth and guitarist Bobby Gustafson, and also included bassist D.D. Verni and drummer Rat Skates (later replaced by Sid Falck). The band garnered a reputation for brutal, pounding speed and technique, but lacked the musical diversity to compete with heavy hitters like Metallica; still, Overkill built up a strong following in the metal underground with albums like 1985’s Taking Over and 1988’s Under the Influence.
