After two albums, Todd Rundgren had one hit and a burgeoning cult following, plus growing respect as a hitmaking record producer. There’s no question he was busy, but as it turns out, all this work only scratched the surface of his ambition. He had decided to abandon the Runt pretense and recorded a full double album by himself (save for one side). Others had recorded one-man albums before, most notably Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney, but Rundgren — without borrowing musically from either artist — captured the homemade ambience of McCartney with the visionary feel of Music of My Mind, adding an encyclopedic knowledge of pop music from Gilbert & Sullivan through Jimi Hendrix, plus the crazed zeal of a pioneer. Unlike the other two Keith Jarrett trio recordings from January 1983, this collaboration with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette does not feature standards. The trio performs the 30-minute “Flying” and a 6-minute “Prism,” both of them Jarrett originals. “Flying,” which has several sections, keeps one’s interest througout while the more concise “Prism” has a beautiful melody. It is a nice change to hear Jarrett (who normally plays unaccompanied) interacting with a trio of superb players. Subtitled ‘The Ravel Album’, this album was also released in the USA as ‘Boléro’ with different packaging and a different running order. A 7″ and 12″ single of ‘Bolero’ (the tune) was released in the UK by popular demand in the light of the success of the movie “10” starring Bo Derek and Dudley Moore. It actually hit the Top 75! Tomita says that this is his favourite album. It was presented to his daughter on her marriage. His daughter’s name and that of her fianceé were written using grass in the picture of ‘Daphnis et Chloé’. The album cover artwork was taken on the front steps of 142 Mercer Street, just north of the intersection of Mercer and Prince Street in the SoHo neighborhood in New York City. The trio hit their stride with second album Solid State Survivor, a brisk and confident set of synth-disco-pop that continues along the line drawn five years before by Kraftwerk. Fun-loving and breezy where Kraftwerk had been ponderous and statuesque, the album sets out YMO’s template for electronic pop with less minimalism and a more varying use of synthesizer lines. Yellow Magic Orchestra is the first official studio album by Japanese electronic music band Yellow Magic Orchestra, who were previously known as the Yellow Magic Band. Originally released by Alfa Records in Japan in 1978, the album was released by A&M Records in Europe and The United States and Canada in early 1979, with the US version featuring new cover art but without the closing track of “Acrobat”.
