The Moody Blues - Long Distance Voyager (1981) [2014, Japanese SHM-SACD, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Blue Chamber Quartet – Children’s Songs (2009) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Blue Chamber Quartet - Children's Songs (2009) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

word of warning: the notes to this CD may detract from the lovely music it contains. German ensemble Blue Chamber Quartet commissioned journalist Cathrin Kahlweit to write a brief essay for each of the work’s 20 movements, first-person vignettes describing the lives of children in 20 countries that seemingly have no discernable relationship to Corea’s gentle, sophisticated miniatures. Arnie Somogyi’s Ambulance – Accident And Insurgency (2007) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Arnie Somogyi's Ambulance - Accident And Insurgency (2007) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

The Hungarian bassist Arnie Somogyi, a long-time luminary of the British contemporary scene, recently formed an alliance with the US doctor-turned-jazzman Eddie Henderson, this cemented with an appearance ar Ronnie Scott’s and this recording. Much of the music performed here by Somogyi’s Ambulance band emerged during a musical development residency at the Snape Maltings, with Henderson added for a May 2006 tour and for this 2007 recording. Ana Caram – Rio After Dark (1989) [2002, Reissue, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Ana Caram - Rio After Dark (1989) [2002, Reissue, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

In stylistic terms, large portions of Ana Caram’s first U.S. album could easily have been recorded in 1962; it’s as if time had stood perfectly still since “Desafinado” became a hit. Yet this is all for the good for this Antonio Carlos Jobim protegé, who can comfortably give material by the more contemporary writer Djavan, and even Carole King’s “You’ve Got a Friend,” the bossa nova treatment. This SACD-Maxi release emerged from a chain of events: During the HIGHEND exposition in Munich Allan Taylor happened to get to know Dieter Burmester, head of “Burmester Audiosystems”. Dieter told him about the sound system that he had designed for the new Porsche Panamera. It was then that Allan told Dieter his story of why he had bought a Porsche and that he had written a song about the true story behind. Erich Kunzel / Cincinnati Pops Orchestra – Got Swing! (2003) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Erich Kunzel / Cincinnati Pops Orchestra - Got Swing! (2003) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

This is a good, solid pops recording; a disc that’s fun to hear. It’s not necessarily for hardcore jazzheads or swing dancers, but might be just the thing to introduce some of these classic tunes to folks who think they don’t like jazz. Most of these tracks don’t swing hard, but there are a few that even a dedicated dancer would want to try out. Continue reading “Erich Kunzel / Cincinnati Pops Orchestra – Got Swing! Willy Porter – Willy Porter (2002) [2005, Reissue, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Willy Porter - Willy Porter (2002) [2005, Reissue, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

These days, musicians often complain that major labels no longer believe in real artist development — if a debut album isn’t a big seller, chances are the artist will be dropped. But artist development is still alive and well at smaller independent labels (for the most part). That is where some A&R people are still willing to develop artists and offer two- or three-album contracts instead of merely one-album deals — which is a good thing because not every artist should be expected to be commercially and creatively triumphant the first time he/she records an album. Some people get better as they go along; even Earth, Wind & Fire recorded several modest sellers before becoming one of the top soul/funk bands of the ’70s.
