Todd Rundgren - A Wizard, A True Star (1973) [2018, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Something/Anything? proved that Todd Rundgren could write a pop classic as gracefully as any of his peers, but buried beneath the surface were signs that he would never be satisfied as merely a pop singer/songwriter. A close listen to the album reveals the eccentricities and restless spirit that surges to the forefront on its follow-up, A Wizard, A True Star. Rickie Lee Jones - The Sermon On Exposition Boulevard (2007) [Limited Edition, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Consulting theologians and Bible scholars during the 1990s, photographer, writer, graphic artist, and everyday mystic Lee Cantelon (aka Pennyhead) assembled a small book presenting the words of Jesus Christ (just Jesus’ words, not the stuff surrounding them) in a fitting translation called The Words. He did it for the purpose of presenting those words to people who were not “religious” — people who were put off by organized religion or even offended by it. Journey – Arrival (2001) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Journey - Arrival (2001) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Journey was formed originally as a vehicle for Neal Schon’s guitar pyrotechnics, but after five years the band sought out a lead singer to give them mainstream pop appeal, and Steve Perry did that, helping them to a string of seven consecutive multi-platinum albums before the band broke up in 1987. A 1996 reunion put them back in the winners’ circle with Trial by Fire, but Perry then bowed out for health reasons, putting Journey in the sticky position of recruiting a new lead singer. (Drummer Steve Smith has also been replaced by Deen Castronovo formerly of Bad English.) Continue reading “Journey – Arrival (2001) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Marillion – Fuck Everyone and Run (F E A R) (2016) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Marillion - Fuck Everyone and Run (F E A R) (2016) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Delivering a political album is always risky, with the possibility that it will get locked in its historical era usually a direct consequence. On their 18th album, prog rockers Marillion don’t seem to care, and they have nothing to lose and no one to account to but themselves. FEAR is an acronym for “Fuck Everybody and Run.” Two of its three lengthy, multi-part suites (“El Dorado” and “The New Kings”) are overtly political statements that look at England and the calamitous state of the world not only observationally but experientially. Nancy Bryan – Neon Angel (2000) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Nancy Bryan - Neon Angel (2000) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

The first non-blues artist on Analogue Productions, Los Angeles singer/songwriter Nancy Bryan offers in Neon Angel, her second APO release, social commentary with intense soul. Bryan’s honesty in her approach to song writing has created a stylization that defies category. Neon Angel is a unique and personal body of work. In it, her lyrics are visual and socially relevant, yet intimate, poetic and immediate. Her music ranges from the ethereal to a plaintive earthiness, and at times both expressions are grasped in the same moment. Continue reading “Nancy Bryan – Neon Angel (2000) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

This 1999 session finds Honeyboy working his acoustic magic in the company of Madison Slim on harmonica and Jimmy D. Lane, son of the late Jimmy Rogers, on second guitar. Recorded at the Blue Heaven Studios (a converted church) in Salina, Kansas, this is a pretty inspired session with Edwards running through old classics like Charlie Patton’s “High Water Everywhere” Continue reading “David Honeyboy Edwards – Shake ‘Em On Down (2000) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]”
