Few debut albums can boast as consistently solid an effort as the self-titled Chicago Transit Authority (1969). Even fewer can claim to have enough material to fill out a double-disc affair. Although this long- player was ultimately the septet’s first national exposure, the group was far from the proverbial “overnight sensation.” Under the guise of the Big Thing, the group soon to be known as CTA had been honing its eclectic blend of jazz, classical, and straight-ahead rock & roll in and around the Windy City for several years. Instead of trying to compete with a newer, fashion-conscious pop marketplace, Linda Ronstadt removed herself from the rat race, recording an album of traditional pop standards with Nelson Riddle. Ronstadt’s voice isn’t always showcased to a fine effect on these songs, but the record is an interesting change of pace. And it would have been more interesting if she hadn’t repeated its formula on her next two records. Style Council’s first proper album Cafe Bleu was one of their better efforts, but it indicated the group’s fatal flaw — a tendency to be too eclectic and overambitious. Amidst the lazy jazz instrumentals, many of them courtesy of Mick Talbot, Paul Weller inserted several solid soul-tinged pop songs, including “My Ever Changing Moods,” “Headstart for Happiness,” “You’re the Best Thing,” and “Here’s One That Got Away.” However, that doesn’t excuse the rap experiment, “A Gospel.” The album was later released with a slightly different running order as My Ever Changing Moods in the U.S.; the American edition included the U.K. hit “A Solid Bond in Your Heart.” Continue reading “The Style Council – Café Bleu (1984) [2010, Japan, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Polarity is an acoustic jazz project from Jan Gunnar Hoff and the Hoff Ensemble. Of the new release, Hoff writes: ”My main goal is to create a specific identity for each album I make. This time I chose to involve Anders Jormin and Audun Kleive, two of Scandinavia’s finest jazz artists. The result is Polarity, an album based on both new and older compositions of mine, recorded in a unique acoustic setting.” Polarity has been conceived as a cohesive experience where the compositions themselves, the moments of spontaneous inspiration during performance and the natural sound world of the church acoustics all affect the final result. After both John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley left Miles Davis’ quintet, he was caught in the web of seeking suitable replacements. It was a period of trial and error for him that nonetheless yielded some legendary recordings (Sketches of Spain, for one). One of those is Someday My Prince Will Come. If the 12″ single of Herb Alpert’s “Rise” hadn’t taken over the charts the way it did back in 1979, one wonders if anyone would have gotten around to checking out the Tijuana Brass, or if Alpert would have gone down in the books as the guy who had a number one with a Burt Bacharach tune (“This Guy’s in Love with You”). Instead, the cut energized the entire dance club generation, with DJs looking for new grooves, and it even ended up being used by Sean “Puffy” Combs on the Notorious B.I.G.’s Hypnotise, albeit in a drastically re-morphed form.
