For the most part, 1979’s Eve is somewhat overlooked as being one of the Alan Parsons Project’s finest work, when in fact it involves some of this group’s most intricate songs. The album’s concept deals with the female’s overpowering effect on man. Each song touches on her ability to dissect the male ego, especially through sexual means, originating with Eve’s tempting Adam in the beginning of time. Not only does this idea gain strength as the album progresses, but a musical battle of the sexes begins to arise through each song. The gorgeous “You Won’t Be There” spotlights man’s insecurity. Pink Floyd – The Endless River (2014) [Deluxe Edition, CD + Blu-Ray]

Pink Floyd - The Endless River (2014) [Deluxe Edition, CD + Blu-Ray]

David Gilmour sang about an endless river on “High Hopes,” the last song on what appeared to be the last Pink Floyd album, 1994’s Division Bell. Twenty years later, the same phrase became the title of The Endless River, an album designed as Pink Floyd’s last. Assembled largely from Division Bell outtakes initially intended as an ambient project dubbed The Big Spliff, the record was sculpted Continue reading “Pink Floyd – The Endless River (2014) [Deluxe Edition, CD + Blu-Ray]”

Barclay James Harvest - Child Of The Universe: The Essential Collection (2013)

Throughout the ’70s and ’80s, England’s Barclay James Harvest were one of prog rock’s most enduring acts, releasing a steady string of well-crafted albums for Harvest Records and Polydor while never quite breaking through to the mainstream success enjoyed by similar acts such as the Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, and Pink Floyd. Tales of Mystery and Imagination is the debut studio album by English rock band The Alan Parsons Project. It was released on 1 May 1976 in the United States by 20th Century Fox Records and on 1 June 1976 in the United Kingdom by Charisma Records. Rick Wakeman – Rick Wakeman’s Greatest Hits (1994)

Rick Wakeman - Rick Wakeman's Greatest Hits (1994)

This Greatest Hits double-disc release is both utterly deceiving and painfully disappointing, since its tracks are made up of fabricated instrumental pieces of Rick Wakeman’s album cuts. Played by Wakeman, the songs are glossed-over remakes that may be true to their original note form, but are not the actual tracks from their previously released albums. Coming off like synthesized Muzak, popular favorites such as “Merlin the Magician,” “The Journey,” and Yes’ “Starship Trooper” lack depth, color, or energy, with only their familiar rhythms and melodies remaining Continue reading “Rick Wakeman – Rick Wakeman’s Greatest Hits (1994)”

With 1971’s Fragile having left Yes poised quivering on the brink of what friend and foe acknowledged was the peak of the band’s achievement, Close to the Edge was never going to be an easy album to make. Drummer Bill Bruford was already shifting restlessly against Jon Anderson’s increasingly mystic/mystifying lyricism, while contemporary reports of the recording sessions depicted bandmate Rick Wakeman, too, as little more than an observer to the vast tapestry that Anderson, Steve Howe, and Chris Squire were creating. Todd Rundgren – Something / Anything? (1972) [2018, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Todd Rundgren - Something / Anything? (1972) [2018, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

After two albums, Todd Rundgren had one hit and a burgeoning cult following, plus growing respect as a hitmaking record producer. There’s no question he was busy, but as it turns out, all this work only scratched the surface of his ambition. He had decided to abandon the Runt pretense and recorded a full double album by himself (save for one side). Others had recorded one-man albums before, most notably Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney, but Rundgren — without borrowing musically from either artist — captured the homemade ambience of McCartney with the visionary feel of Music of My Mind, adding an encyclopedic knowledge of pop music from Gilbert & Sullivan through Jimi Hendrix, plus the crazed zeal of a pioneer. YES – Discography (1969 – 2014)

YES - Discography (1969 - 2014)

Far and away the longest lasting and the most successful of the ’70s progressive rock groups, Yes proved to be one of the lingering success stories from that musical genre. The band, founded in 1968, overcame a generational shift in its audience and the departure of its most visible members at key points in its history to reach the end of the century as the definitive progressive rock band.
