Appropriately, the soundtrack for the 1978 movie FM feels like a radio play list of the era, collecting songs from Joe Walsh, Randy Meisner, Boz Scaggs, and other ’70s radio staples. Steely Dan’s title track, Queen’s “We Will Rock You,” Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band’s “Night Moves,” Billy Joel’s “Just The Way You Are,” and Boston’s “More Than a Feeling” are some of the highlights from this double-disc set, which also includes tracks from Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Foreigner, and Linda Ronstadt, all of whom also appeared in the film. Houston is featured on three of the 16 selections including the “Exhale (Shoop Shoop),” which crested at the number spot on the Billboard R&B charts for eight consecutive weeks and one week at number one on the pop charts. Stevie Wonder’s career in the 1980s was a source of frustration to the fans he had earned in the ’60s and ’70s. In 1982, there were a few new songs on a greatest-hits album and a duet with Paul McCartney. Then came this soundtrack to a Gene Wilder comedy that was simultaneously more of a pop vocal album than most soundtracks and yet less than a full-fledged Wonder record. Gabriel Yared composed most of the music for the soundtrack of one of 1996’s most acclaimed dramas, which was largely performed by the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields; John Constable (on solo piano) and Marta Sebestyen (vocals) are also featured. Yared’s score is mostly typical wide-screen epic stuff–nothing special. More interesting are Hungarian folk singer Sebestyen’s occasional contributions. A few period pop/jazz cuts by Benny Goodman, Ella Fitzgerald, and Fred Astaire are interspersed throughout, and are most likely more effective on screen than on disc, where they juxtapose uncomfortably with the orchestral instrumental pieces.
