Indochine is a French pop rock and new wave band formed in Paris in 1981. They became very successful in the Francophonie, Europe and Latin America in the 1980s, with songs like “L’Aventurier” and “Canary Bay”. The hit single “Have You Never Been Mellow” carried Olivia Newton-John right back to number one, six months after “I Honestly Love You” brought the singer to that coveted position for the first time. The title track is a masterpiece of songwriting by her producer, John Farrar, an exquisitely pleasant melody with a sunny and peaceful theme. Having covered John Denver’s “Take Me Home Country Roads” on the Let Me Be There album in 1973, Newton-John goes back to the Denver catalog twice on this project, including her beautiful rendition of one of his lesser-known gems, “Follow Me,” with Farrar’s lush country-pop instrumental backing. The title track was released in March 1974. Newton-John performed it at the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest when she represented the UK. Along with the title track, five other tracks from the LP had been the six shortlisted songs for the UK selection for Eurovision, broadcast as A Song for Europe, 1974. The song that placed second, “Angel Eyes”, was also released as the B-side of the “Long Live Love” single. Whether it’s the last hour you were allowed to play outside as a child before you had to go home, a reference to the fight against time in regard to the climate crisis or the last minutes of a person’s life – “An Hour Before It’s Dark” certainly doesn’t lack interpretations. Coming from the NW Switzerland on the language border between the Alemanics and the Romands, this unusual quartet of musicians has a strange line-up. Hauser is one of the better percussionists (still playing but in jazz bands nowadays), and bassist Cerletti (the only non-Alemanic in the band) is certainly excellent plays also acoustic guitar. The other two, Fri and Grieder, share the wind instruments with the vocals. That’s it! No KB and almost no el. guitars, at least on the first two albums. Welcome To The Planet is the next studio album by Big Big Train and comes six months after the release of the band’s critically acclaimed top 40 album Common Ground. As With Common Ground, Welcome To The Planet sees Big Big Train retain their progressive roots but also take influence from all spheres of music. The album’s opener ‘Made From Sunshine’, co-written by guitarist Dave Foster and singer David Longdon, has guitar lines redolent of Johnny Marr and vocal harmonies reminiscent of the Finn Brothers/Crowded House, with violinist Clare Lindley sharing lead vocals with Longdon.
