Chrissie Hynde approximated the classic early Pretenders sound on the Dan Auerbach-produced Alone, a 2016 album where she was the only Pretender on record. Hate for Sale flips this situation on its head. Hiring Stephen Street as producer — he last worked with the group on 1999’s Viva el Amor — Hynde brought the touring Pretenders lineup into the studio, a configuration that includes founding drummer Martin Chambers, who hasn’t played on an album by the band since 2002’s Loose Screw. An eye-opening trip to San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury during the summer of 1967 inspired British-born drummer Chris Judge Smith to compose a list of possible names for the rock group he wished to form. Upon his return to Manchester University, he began performing with singer/songwriter Peter Hammill and keyboardist Nick Peame; employing one of the names from Judge Smith’s list, the band dubbed itself Van der Graaf Generator (after a machine that creates static electricity), eventually earning an intense cult following as one of the era’s preeminent art rock groups. Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller only worked together twice, briefly in 1925 in Erskine Tate’s band and four years later in the New York revue Connie’s Hot Chocolates. Anner Bylsma, who plays a Baroque cello in original condition, has written a whole book about the variety of bow strokes needed for this music. The very title of First Rose of Spring — Willie Nelson’s 70th or 94th or 143rd, all depending on how you count things — suggests a bit of a rebirth, an emotion that hasn’t been particularly prevalent on the albums Willie recorded and released during his eighties. Turns out, the sentiment of the title and its accompanying song is a bit of a feint, since there are a fair number of nods to Nelson’s advanced age scattered through this 2020 record, but the tone of the album isn’t especially meditative or bleak.
