Featuring members of Soundgarden and what would soon become Pearl Jam, Temple of the Dog’s lone eponymous album might never have reached a wide audience if not for Pearl Jam’s breakout success a year later. In turn, by providing the first glimpse of Chris Cornell’s more straightforward, classic rock-influenced side, Temple of the Dog helped set the stage for Soundgarden’s mainstream breakthrough with Superunknown. Consider True Meanings Paul Weller’s comedown from a combustive, creative decade begun with 22 Dreams. That 2008 double album was co-produced with Simon Dine, who proved to be such a vital collaborator for Weller that the singer/songwriter found it difficult to shake off the producer’s influence after the two parted ways acrimoniously in 2012. R.E.M. began to move toward mainstream record production on Lifes Rich Pageant, but they didn’t have a commercial breakthrough until the following year’s Document. Ironically, Document is a stranger, more varied album than its predecessor, but co-producer Scott Litt — who would go on to produce every R.E.M. album in the following decade — is a better conduit for the band than Don Gehman, giving the group a clean sound without sacrificing their enigmatic tendencies. Frantic manages to touch upon virtually every musical style of Bryan Ferry’s career. Ferry has proved to be as interested in covering other artists’ material as penning original songs, and he straddles a smart mix of originals and covers here. Two brilliant Bob Dylan songs appear among the opening tracks: “It’s All Over Now Baby Blue” sees a return to the eclectic, energetic experimentation of Ferry’s early albums with Roxy Music as a lush modern swirl of instruments mingles with the singer’s stylized vocals and throwback harmonica; “Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright” completes the Dylan pair, as Ferry intones with confidence and again takes up harmonica over Colin Good’s rolling piano. From 1999’s Music Bank box set and its one-CD compilation offshoot, Nothing Safe: The Best of the Box to a 1996 Unplugged CD, the Alice in Chains titles continue to arrive even while the band–and especially reclusive frontman Layne Staley–stagnates. The quartet’s heavy, dirgelike music is aging well, but the 10 songs that comprise Greatest Hits are the basic radio hits. Greatest Hits features no new music, no liner notes, no lyrics, no new photos, and no elaborate packaging. Still, for the rock fan Continue reading “Alice In Chains – Greatest Hits (2001) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Flesh + Blood suggested that Roxy Music were at the end of the line, but they regrouped and recorded the lovely Avalon, one of their finest albums. Certainly, the lush, elegant soundscapes of Avalon are far removed from the edgy avant-pop of their early records, yet it represents another landmark in their career. With its stylish, romantic washes of synthesizers and Bryan Ferry’s elegant, seductive croon, Avalon simultaneously functioned as sophisticated make-out music for yuppies and as the maturation of synth pop. Ferry was never this romantic or seductive, either with Roxy or as a solo artist Continue reading “Roxy Music – Avalon (1982) {2003, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip}”

Roger Waters, the man who equated “education” with “thought control” in his pseudo-opera The Wall, is now back and appealing to higher culture in his new opera Ça Ira. Moreover, this is a real opera, with singers, a chorus, and an orchestra with not a single dreamy, overlong electric guitar solo in sight. Fans of Pink Floyd will find little in Ça Ira to satisfy their jones for “the Floyd,” although there are many standard musical features associated with the classic rock staple group that have been carried over into this work — crushingly slow tempi, somber and monotonous singing, and a mania for pristine recordings of sound effects. At one point, a volley of musket fire makes you jump out of your seat. Continue reading “Roger Waters – Ça Ira: There Is Hope (2005) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

With their brutal, simple riffs and aggressive, fast tempos, Accept are one of the top metal bands to debut in the early ’80s and a major influence on the development of speed metal and thrash. Led by the distinctive vocal stylings of Udo Dirkschneider, the band forged an instantly recognizable sound and were notorious as one of the decade’s fiercest live acts.
