Diamonds & Rust is a 1975 album by American singer-songwriter Joan Baez. Baez on this album covered songs written or played by Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, The Allman Brothers, Jackson Browne and John Prine. Diamonds & Rust, however, also contains a number of her own compositions, including the title track, a distinctive song written about Bob Dylan, which has been covered by various other artists. Despite Jackson’s anxious demeanor and shaky pop/rock presence, I’m the Man holds together quite well as his second attempt. Reaching number 12 in the U.K. and a respectable number 22 in the U.S., the album managed to net him a number five hit in his homeland with the insightful “It’s Different for Girls,” which revealed Jackson’s adeptness at philosophizing and his perception of examining the sexes, a trait which would follow him throughout his career. The last of a series of showtune albums recorded by the trio of pianist Andre Previn, bassist Red Mitchell and drummer Shelly Manne finds the all-star group focusing on the music of West Side Story (Previn and Manne alternated leadership, and it was the drummer’s good fortune to have the famous My Fair Lady album under his own name). Considering the fraught circumstances in which this album was recorded, it’s a miracle it sounds as serene as it does. Originally, this was planned as a collaborative project between Krause and his musical partner, Paul Beaver, for Columbia, but that deal collapsed when CBS executive Clive Davis was fired. Although it would have been interesting to hear Nat King Cole play some piano and perhaps accompany a vocal by George Shearing instead of exclusively the other way around, this session was a big success. Cole is in prime form on such tunes as “September Song,” “Pick Yourself Up,” and “Serenata.” Shearing’s accompaniment is tasteful and lightly swinging, and the string arrangements help to accentuate the romantic moods. With an album cover that would make R. Kelly blush, (Egan appears on back cover getting frisky with a couple of high school cheerleaders) Fundamental Roll, the debut album from 70s one hit wonder Walter Egan proves that he was in fact much more than that. Initially Egan was interested in having Brian Wilson or Todd Rundgren produce his debut, but when neither became available his friend/engineer Duane Scott (who had worked with Egan on his previous band Wheels) suggested he get in touch with Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac. Due to the title cut, this was a huge seller when it originally came out. Reissued on CD, this set from flügelhornist Chuck Mangione (which helped give guitarist Grant Geissman some fame) is actually stronger from the jazz standpoint than Mangione’s subsequent dates. Definitely Maybe begins with a statement of aspiration, as Liam Gallagher sneers that “tonight, I’m a rock & roll star” — the words of a bedsit dreamer hoping he’d break out of those four walls and find something greater. Maybe all he could muster is a fleeting moment of stardom as he sings in front of a fleet of amps pushing out power chords, or perhaps he’d really become a rock & roll star; all that matters is he makes the leap. Danny Elfman provides one of his most quintessentially Elfman-esque scores for one of Tim Burton’s most quintessentially Burton-esque movies, Beetlejuice. The film’s dark yet sardonically funny “Main Titles” is among Elfman’s all-time best moments, bustling along with a dark joie de vivre (or is it joie de morte?) that defines the spooky fun of both this movie, and his collaboration with Burton.
