Country Joe (Joseph Allen) McDonald is an American musician from the 60s’ psychedelic rock group Country Joe and the Fish. Since the breakup of his group in 1971, McDonald continued to convey his political and ecological views through his music. This 1975 album, which includes the anthemic tune “Save the Whales!”, reflected an increase in McDonald’s ecological commitment, and features former Fish Bruce Barthol and ex-Instant Action Jug Band member Phil Marsh. Lightfoot’s commercial peak came with this album, which topped the U.S. charts, containing both the number one title song and the Top Ten hit “Carefree Highway.” But songs like “Somewhere U.S.A.” and “High and Dry” are textured, catchy folk-rock on a par with the better-known tunes. Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town is a transitional effort that bridges the curveballs of Emmylou Harris’ earliest solo work with the more traditional country albums that comprise the bulk of the second phase of her career. For the first time, she covers no Gram Parsons tunes or pop music chestnuts, relying instead on newly exited Hot Band member Rodney Crowell for two songs (“Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight” and “I Ain’t Living Long Like This”) and Dolly Parton for another (the devastating “To Daddy”); the highlight is a gorgeous cover of Jesse Winchester’s “Defying Gravity.” Continue reading “Emmylou Harris – Quarter Moon In A Ten Cent Town (1978) [1979, MFSL Remastered, CD-Quality + Hi-Res Vinyl Rip]”

The Berkeley shows by Jimi Hendrix are fairly well known because not only were the shows filmed, but they have been bootlegged pretty extensively over the years as well. Live at Berkeley: 2nd Show marks the first official release of this material, and, like its predecessor, Blue Wild Angel: Live at the Isle of Wight, the show has its strengths and weaknesses. This is a particularly interesting release because it features the 1978 version of Manhattan Transfer performing at three different concerts. This is how the ensemble sounded live when Laurel Masse was still in the lineup along with Tim Hauser, Janis Siegel and Alan Paul. The pacesetting vocal group (accompanied by a quintet that includes guitarist Wayne Johnson and Don Roberts on reeds) runs through 18 songs, many of which are quite brief. This is the ultimate Neil Diamond record. Not necessarily the best — he’s at his most appealing crafting in the studio — but certainly the ultimate, capturing all the kitsch and glitz of Neil Diamond, the showman. And that also means that it’s not just loaded with flair, but with filler, songs like “Porcupine Pie,” “Soggy Pretzels,” and “And the Grass Won’t Pay No Mind” — attempts to write grand, sweeping epics that collapse under their own weight. Still, that’s part of the charm of Diamond and while it can sound unbearable on studio albums, it makes some sense here, surrounded by his pomp and circumstance. An accomplished vocalist and writer, Gibb shot to the top of the charts with his 1977 debut Flowing Rivers. Shadow Dancing, released just one year later, effortlessly confirmed his ascension to the top of the pop pedestal. Working with his brothers again, Gibb wowed audiences with his easy-on-the-ears passionate pop. Continue reading “Andy Gibb – Shadow Dancing (1978) [Japan, CD-Quality + Hi-Res Vinyl Rip]”

The stage was set for the Police to become one of the biggest acts of the ’80s, and the band delivered with the 1980 classic Zenyatta Mondatta. The album proved to be the trio’s second straight number one album in the U.K., while peaking at number three in the U.S. Arguably the best Police album, Zenyatta contains perhaps the quintessential new wave anthem, the haunting “Don’t Stand So Close to Me,” the story of an older teacher lusting after one of his students. Frank Sinatra’s Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 was Sinatra’s second compilation of material released by Reprise Records, which like its predecessor, consisted of singles and songs from movie soundtracks. Vol. 2 picks up where Frank Sinatra’s Greatest Hits leaves off, so all of the tracks date from 1968 to 1970, except for “The September of My Years”, which dates back to 1965. Though the song “My Way” became Sinatra’s signature song, it was not a big hit in the US. Continue reading “Frank Sinatra – Greatest Hits, Vol. II (1973) [UK version, CD-Quality + Hi-Res Vinyl Rip]”
